I am looking to buy a CPU for my XPS 400. I'm looking at a Pentium D 940 3.2GHZ. What does the 940 mean and are there different types? Will it be compatible?

Pentium D's are Socket 775 CPU's, so yes, one will fit your system.

The D-series were among the first dual core CPU's, so the technology in them is a bit outdated, but in no means insignificant. I use a D 940 myself and love it - it handles everything I through at it with power to spare and runs very cool for something of it's architecture (32*C Idle, 44*C under load), so don't listen to all the horror stories of being able to fry an egg on one:rolleyes:

As far as different types, in the D-series, there were 800's and 900's. Each had several different variations designated by increases of 5, starting with x20 (so 820, 825, 920, 925, etc.), and each of those version had a different clock-speed. The 800's were 90-nm technology, but the 900's were 65-nm, which is better.
