CPU for new PC

Hey everyone! I am on a quest to build my own high performance PC! I am fairly new to this and so need quite a bit of help! Anyway, I would like some advice on what CPU to get. As I'm not quite sure how this really works do you need to know any specific info to make a reccommendation?

I can tell you so far that I will be using the system for gaming and music production mainly, as well as the usual wrd processing etc. As far as money goes it might be cool if you suggested both a top level component, and a more middle of the range one too.

Thanks for your suggestions

well, personally i think the core 2 duo e6300 is the best bang for the buck with the right motherboard.
it performs around a pentium 4 3.6ghz or so and its also dual core, giving it the advantage in multi-threaded apps. its one of the coolest running processors on the market today, and it also outperforms most other processors.
it starts out at 1.86ghz but people have been overclocking them, to what ive seen to be about an average of 3.2ghz or so... but i got unlucky and my motherboard won't go that far for me.

either way, it runs extremely cool, its extremely fast, and most motherboards that support it will also supports intel's quad core which will be out very soon.

for gaming though, i'd suggest that you get a good video card... but you may want to wait to get a higher end one since directX 10 is very close to its release. if i bought one today though, enough to play games without overspending on it, i'd get a 7600gt or a 7600gs. that should hold you until they at least have an affordable video card with geometry shaders integrated into the architecture.

IF YOU CAN GET A e6600

AND WITH dx10 I WOULD JUST SPEND YOUR MONEY AND GET A 8800gtx/gts RIGHT AWAY. DONT WASTE MONEY BY BUYING A 7600GT
