Cpu Heat Problem

I just went to my bios to check on the temperature. I stayed in the bios for about 15-20 minutes for the temperature to settle (underload).

After the temperature settle, the cpu = 52C, motherboard = 30.5C, in a room temperature of 21.5C.

My system is:

CPU-Northwood P4 2.5GHz (400FSB, 512Cache)
Heatsink & Fan-I think it is the original one that came with the CPU because it got "Intel" on it
Motherboard-Asus P4s8x-x (lan & sound)
Memory-PC333 512DDR
Hard Drive-Maxtor 80GB
Fan Speed-2425RPM to 2500RPM

6 month old system, still under warrenty

Actually the temperature of the CPU really vary. I have a Asus Probe 2 (the program that monitor the temperature that comes with the motherboard) as well, and the temperature of the Asus Probe 2 and my bios really vary. Normally the program is higher than the bios. But one of my friend told me always go for the bios temperature. The problem with bios is that, everytime I want ot check the temperature, I have to restart the computer and press "Del" when the computer loads. I don't know how to check the temperature of CPU (bios) on the windows.

Since the temperature vary, and changes with 5 minutes. I always wait 10-15 minutes for the IDLE temperature to settle and normally it is 52C or 53C, and the motherboard is 30C or 31C.

My friend told me my temperature is a liitle high for a Northwood P4 but not really dangerous. He suggest me to get a better cooling system, but the problem is, first I am not a computer expert so I don'y really want to risk the chance of breaking any of the computer parts, athough I could go to my computer store (I still got 6 month warrenty) and buy another cooling system and I am pretty sure they will install it for me. But I am only planning my system for another 1.5 years to 2.5 years, then I will sell it and get another one. I don't know if get another cooling system will help me in anyway, I am not really short on $ but I don't think it is really worth it to get another cooling system. And by the way, I don't play game. But I did ran a game (some kind of shooting game I think) for about 25 minutes, then I closed the computer immediately then went into bios, the CPU temperature is 58.

Please help me.

It would be advisable for you to upgrade your CPU cooling if you really want to lower your CPU temp. How many fan thus your case have? The fact that you have an ambient temp of 21c you should make use of it by adding case fan(intake), it will greatly reduce your CPU and CASE temp. Switch to MBM5 instead of ASUS PROBE. There is no way you can read your BIOS temp thru WINDOWS, there is a margin of error of -3/+3 if you use a monitoring software.

I download the MBM5. The IDLE temperature i showed really vary form my bios. It said my CPU temperature is 31C and my motherboard temperature is 32C (according to MBM5 under the room temperature of 23.5C). But my bios always say my IDLE temperature is cpu=52C and motherboard temperature=30.5C. Now, I am really confused. The MEM5 and the Asus Probe 2 (both of them shows similar temperature) show different temperature than my bios, 11C to 12C difference. Which is more accurate, MEM5 and Asus Probe 2 or bios? PlEaSe HeLp

None of them are really accurate, its serves only as your basis. If you are really that critical about your temp, then upgrade your CPU cooling and some case fans, as ived said monitoring software has a margin of error of -3/+3 or i think more as youved just said.

keep in mind the high temp read by the bios is the cpu under full load. there is no idling in the bios the unused cycles are burned instead of inactive. A northwood shouldn't be getting that hot unless something is helping it, like poor case ventilation, or a failing fan

So you mean there is no such thing as IDLE temperature in bios? Then I should just go with the temperature of the "MBM5" and "ASUS Probe 2"? (normally, 2 of them shows the same temperature) because the software and the bios temperature really vary, it makes a lot of different to me. Please answer my questions.

Again, by the way my CPU temperature is 41C and my motherboard temperature is 32C according to MBM5 and Asus Probe 2 under the room temperature of 23.5C.

And according to my bios, the cpu temperature is 52C or 53C.

Please help. I dont know what temperature is consider as more accurate IDLE temperature.

The temp listed in the bios is full load, there is no idle signal sent before windows is loaded. MBM and Asus probe have the most accurate temperature for the idle state
