CPU heatsink and fan choice

Guys,

just looking on a components website, there are LOADS of different models of Heatsink / Fan combination solution, and this is for EACH manufacturer... so there is so much choice i dont know what to do.

Basically i would like to buy something really really good at cooling the CPU down, but something that doesnt require yards of clearance. Im about to buy an Antec P180 (if this is any help on imagining size allowance). I know the P180 is good at cooling anyway, but i want to go even better to cool my CPU, and something that is compact by comparison.

Does anyone know which are some of the BEST heatsink / fan solutions for this job?

I think i probably prefer not to buy the 'gass evapourating / condensing' type (sorry, forget its proper name).

Please advise. :)

thanks in advance.

for what socket pc are you looking?
for socket 939, i recommend mine :)
Arctic cooler: Freezer 64. it comes alread built together in the box, and fitting it is really a piece of cake :D its really silent, and it cools up to a 5000+ according to the specs.

Oh darn!...

i said to myself NOT to forget to mention the socket type.. and i forgot. :o

Socket 775. any suggestions??

:)

ive found this one, and i like the desighn of it ^_^

Thanks guys.

hairy_lee, how's the performance of the cooler you're using now mate?.. the silver one in the photo below your post looks impressive but not sure how it compares with what you have..... need to get something small but still VERY good at cooling.

the xp 120 is probably one of the best coolers on the market, my thermaltake venus 12 which i have now is much better than my old asus star ice.
if you can afford it i would go for the xp 120, however you did say that you didn't want the type that works by evaporating gas/condensing, which the xp 120 happens to use (they're called heat pipes).
i dont really see why you wouldn't want to use this type as they offer superior cooling in most examples

*edit* if you're using an athlon 64 based system try the thermaltake venus 12, its small and offers good cooling

Hairy_lee,

Sorry, i take back my unwanting heat-pipes... i thought they just needed bags of extra room and were just a 'gimic' - but i hear good things about them. I notice the XP 120 is a passive cooler (no fan) - and its still one of the best?

Thanks,

Speak soon.

its pretty good without a fan but if you add a fan to it (which it allows you to do without modifying it) you'll get excellent performance. if you do decide to get this one you'll need to check if your motherboard is compatable, there's is also an XP 90 which solves these problems on some boards

Cheers Hairy_Lee,

I've been looking into this heatsink and im gonna go for it... i just need to decide on the bigger 120 size or the smaller 90 size. will keep you posted.

thanks.
