if i buy the core i7 920 and use the heatsink and fan that comes with it do i still need to put arctic silver on it?

No it comes with its own thermal past but I recommend that you not only use after market thermal past(like AS5) but you also purchase and after market heatsink.

if i do get an aftermarket heatsink and apply my own arctic silver how much do i actually put on and do i put it on the cpu or the heatsink

It doesn't take much only about the size of a piece of rice. Put a spot right in the middle of the CPU then set the cooler on(try not to move the cooler around to much) and secure it to the motherboard. If you get a cooler that has a ruff surface or has spaces where the heat pipes are then you should put a small(very very small) amount on the cooler and rub it in to fill the spaces.

To add on to what fatback said, you put quite a tiny amount on, and you dont have to spread it out, when you push the pins on your HS it will apply some force and will spread the paste out quite a bit, i like it this way because it evenly spreads itself out in a natural way, its not uneven, unlike like if you spread it out yourself.

np, o the v8, i have heard some good and bad things about that cooler, it cools good, but is pretty expensive, heres a better option imo, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233032, about the same price, but this cooler will be quite a bit better..

I don't believe that heatsink comes with a fan. So he will have to get a one for it. I would still go with the V8 it is a great cooler.

o ok good, dont get artic silver 5, i would suggest this thermal compound. I just put it in my rig, and lowered the temps 12 degrees(F), from switching from stock tim to tinuq tx-2.

This was probably one of the least expensive upgrades but the most fun to do and see, cause it was only 5 bucks and all i had to do was wipe the stuff off, and reapply.

Have you ever used AS5. I was using TX-2 then I put some AS5 on and my temps dropped 4C. AS5 is the best newegg sales. TX-2 is good but AS5 is a good bit better.

You know, ihave personally never used AS5, but i have seen quite a few tests and graphs, and most of them have the tx-2 on top by a lil bit, so i went with it.

Don't believe benchmarks and charts for anything. There are a number of things that can throw them off. You can never really know until you have used it.
