I currently have a 939 socket amd athlon 3500, and I was wondering if I got an amd athlon X2 4400 939 socket can I just use the same heat sink and fan that came with my 3500 or do I have to get a new one?

I would be getting the 4400 only, no fans or heat sinks included, thats why I need to know this

If you are talking about the stock hsf that came with the 3500+ also in use here at the moment you may want to consider getting a "better" 3rd party cooler especially if you game or run multimedia alot. If you plan on gaming the 4200+ X2 or 4600+ X2 models seem to work out better. But let's take a look at a few coolers that will work on the X2 line first.

If you are on a tight budget or have a price limit in mind Artic Cooling has the Freezer64 Pro seen on sale at http://www.coolerguys.com/840556058274.html

Zalman has one model already in use on the 3500+ here that will go right on an X2 or Socket 940 dual cored cpu right away. You can look over the higher priced CNS9500 at http://www.coolerguys.com/840556025061.html This model comes with it's own speed controller you can stick on the outside of the case for convenience and offers substantial cooling when your cpu is loaded.

These two were among the list offered at http://www.coolerguys.com/atso9401.html#top

To further price shop and look over some others not seen I'll add another pair of links here. http://www.xoxide.com/amdcpucooler.html also has some good deals of cases. Newegg has a much longer list of makes and models to browse through on several pages at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=574&N=2010110574

Thank you for the quick replies, and yes, I am talking about the stock hsf that came with the 3500. I will look into a better hsf, but would the stock 3500 cool it enough for a month or so until I can get a better hsf?

I certainly don't see any immediate problem if you run the system at stock and no ocing! The temps will be a little higher due to it being a dual core model. But still keep an eye on them anyways. You will need a good thermal compound like Artic Silver 5 or even the new Liquid Pro for remounting the stock as well as aftermarket cooler you decide on later.

SpeedFan, Everest Home version, and SiSoftware's Sandra Lite are freewares and diagnostic programs that can be used to keep an eye on the temps. SpeedFan is found at http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
