cpu is overheating

well the computer i just built will run for about 5 mins or so and then shuts down due to the cpu overheating. i talked to a guy a work who seems to know his stuff about computers, being that he takes care of all the comptuer and network stuff at work and he told me that the range on the motherboard may be set too low and when it hits the max temp it shuts down.

where can i find information on the safe operation temperature of my cpu (intel core 2 duo e6400 model:bx80557e6400). also where can i find information on how to set a different temperature range on my motherboard, since there is no information in the book about that type of stuff. (asus p5b delux)

if you think this may not be the problem, what are some other places i can check so that it doesnt constantly shut down

by the way the heatsink and 2 other case fans are running, and it still overheats...wtf

use the intel thermal analysis program to monitor the temperature. try reseating the cpu and also try put some artic silver 5 if you have any to spare. the default setting for the computer should be no problem.

He means reseating the heatsink..

But first, check your temperatures with Intel's TAT or Speedfan.

i am not running windows yet (it has not stayed running long enough to install it), can i run those intel programs through the bios?
