CPU Load Skyrockets When Internet Unlocked

Hey all, I'm running ZoneAlarm basic (free) firewall and avast free on the home computer which is running XP MediaCenter Edition. I've noticed that the computer is constantly on full load or at least sounds like it, as I can hear it from the other room. The computer is an old Dell Dimension 4700, which I know doesn't have the best cooling, but I know it isn't THAT bad. The case doesn't have tons of dust in it either, I checked. Anyways, I saw that ZA was showing internet activity and my CPU was at 70%-100% load (going up and down) with the desktop just sitting there. Out of curiosity, I engaged the internet lockdown feature. Instantly, the CPU load dropped to normal levels. THAT got me a little concerned. Windoze general process manager kept trying to connect to the internet according to ZA. Eventually, the Comcast server tried to connect back to my computer! (I have their internet) Which is REALLY strange I think. I'm scanning the computer right now, and I'm on my personal one right now. It's been doing this a while now, and I can't figure it out.

Oh, I thought I'd add that it has disappearing HDD space too. I deleted a bunch of stuff because windows gave my the low HDD space error. The last time this happened, I was confused because I hadn't downloaded anything. Well, turns out my family has been watching tons of online media, and Google Chrome keeps it all in the cache. I cleared that and got several GB back. I also reduced the system restore file size. This time, though, was different. I got the error randomly, and it said only 125mb left. WTF? So, I deleted a couple linux liveCD images and dump the recycle. Still, it says 220mb. I just deleted 2gb! WTF! So... I delete the Chrome cache. Stubbornly stays at 220mb. So, I restart my computer. Low and behold, 15gb free! Made absolutely no sense because I deleted at most 3gb.

One other thing... Recently I got an error balloon on the taskbar (which has an icon like the one next to my post) that says Zclient:.exe has a missing log file in C:/Windows/System32/internet logs/ something something, and to run CHKDSK. That sounds completely unneccessary to me and I have no idea where this could've come from.

Any ideas guys? I know this is a lot of stuff, and I would appreciate any answers you got.

EDIT: The error message I got says this... "C:\WINDOWS\internet logs\tvDebug.log is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the CHKDSK utility." It also came up in an error message window when I restarted the computer as it was shutting down. This computer is coming apart at the seams I swear. I'm careful what sites I go to, but perhaps the rest of the people around here aren't.

Apparently this is a common problem: http://forums.zonealarm.com/showthread.php?t=71284

After the installation of latest 9.0.136, the free space of system partition keeps dropping quickly and the vsmon.exe consumes more CPU time. After a little research, it turned out to be a misconfiguration of the default settings by Zonealarm 9.0.136. Zonealamr Pro 9.0.136 turns on the debug functionality by default and then a very big file of tvDebug.log, located at C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs, will be generated and keep growing.

So if anyone encounters this problem, please ctrl+shift+right click on the ZA icon in the bottom right systray area. Then choose 'set debug level' -> 'off'->'OK', and then either restart Zonealarm or restart your computer. Then go to C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs and delete that big log file.

That should take care of the big log and CPU time.

As for the corrupted file, are any other files having this problem? Assuming the drive supports it, you may want to run a SMART check on the drive to see if it's predicting a failure. There are lots of tools out there that can read a drives SMART info.

Oh really? Cool I'll look into that. Thanks!

That is the only corrupted file there was. At restart windows automatically used CHKDSK to fix it. I believe the file was deleted actually.

Well, it wasn't. I looked in the folder and the debug file was only 5.7mb. The entire internet log folder was only 181mb. So, I'm not sure if this is the problem or not. I did, however, set the debug level to off.
