CPU MB compatibility question

This is kind of a noob questions, but, when choosing a CPU and Mobo, do I just have to make sure the mobo has the correct socket for the CPU or are there other things I need to consider too? I have an Intel Pentium D and I'm wondering if the CPU can fit into an Aopen AX34-U Mobo I have, I don't think it would, but I'm just wondering. Thanks!

That's the main factor, yes, but also motherboards only support up to a certain FSB/TDP (e.g. 1066MHz/65W) - Nearly all modern mobos will support modern CPUs that are the right socket OuOfThBo, or if the CPU is alot newer than the mobo then sometimes a BIOS flash is required.

In answer to your question, no your mobo will not support Pentium D because:

It's the wrong socket type.
The board only supports up to 133MHz FSB, the Pentium Ds range from 533MHz to 1066MHz.
So you are right, basically the mobo is too old

Thanks for the info guys. I have another motherboard, an Intel D865PERL, It supports the Celeron D CPU, is this pretty much the same as the Pentium D? Is it okay for me to put the Pentium D into this motherboard?
