Cpu/ Mobo combo

Well my bro fried his mobo and is in the market for a new one.

Right now he is on socket 754 w/ pci-e. Initally I was going to get him a socket 754 mobo and call it a day. However upon searching 754 mobos, I didn't find any that I like at all. So we are now debating switching over to 939 or frankly any other socket (amd or intel).
If he is going anywhere besides s754 then he obviously needs a new cpu to tag along. What is the best cpu/ mobo combo out below 200 usd? I've already configed a few, but wanted to bounce it off some of you.

Also, I've heard rummors of amd2 going back to socket 754 and eventually s939 phasing out. Any comments on this.

His system now:

Sempron 2800
MSI s754 w/ pci-e
1gig coarsair value
80 gig sata 150

etc

Urm...unless I'm badly mistaking, AM2 IS the next socket. Seeing as it's coming out soon, why not wait a little longer and just go to a 939 when their prices drop?
 
Isn't amd2 comming out in something like 3 weeks. Well the thing is he wants it up and running now. If it was me I would wait.

Theres no such thing as AMD2, it's AM2. It's a 940-Pin Socket, and its replacing the 939 socket. And i think it will be out in a few months, not a few weeks.
 
lol, looks like word of mouth was far off.

So if you are right, than bassically both s754 and s939 are goners.

What do you think the base running price will be for the low end cpu's/ mobos?

939 will be like 754's today, they wont exactly be "gone", but they wont be top-of-the-line anymore.

I dont know how much the motherboards will cost, but the CPU's are a little more expensive than the current ones. I believe that the Sempron 3600+ is around $160, and the X2 3800+ is around $303.
