CPU/Motherboard Combination

I'm torn between these two CPU/Motherboard pairings. Am I wrong in thinking that if I go with the AMD CPU/Motherboard I will be future proofing to a degree? I know the socket 775 will slowly be phased out as the summer turns into fall with the increasing popularity of the i7s. I'm trying to work on a really tight budget here and the i7s are not in my price range. So what do you all think, go with the tried and true Intel, or maybe the AMD is down my alley?

Be careful...

You chose an AM3 CPU for a AM2/AM2+ MOBO. Not knocking intel but I've had AMD since my first Athlon 700MHz. I was/am succesful with my X2 5200+ and am expecting my Phenom II 920 to perform excellent. I too have heard good things about the i7, but like you, I have a budget.

So is that motherboard not compatible with that CPU? Or is the CPU compatible with the board, but the socket type the board has is an "older" one, yet it fits newer CPUs? I'm not too sure what to go by here. I have spent my time looking at Intel products over the past few years.

that cpu will work with that board, although not to it's full potential. the phII's have memory controllers for both ddr2 and ddr3. you can always upgrade the board and memory down the road, and see a performance increase in the cpu as well, and it won't break your bank.

This statement is true contingent to the MOBO. look for "AM3 Ready" or similar, This allows existing AM2/AM2+ systems to upgrade to the CPU without having to upgrade any other components.

Also, I wasn't stating that the combination wouldn't work, just a "caution" to the OP in case he wasn't aware of the difference. There are many vendors out there and your chances are good that you can get an AM3 CPU AND an AM3 MOBO combined with DDR3 RAM at a pretty fair price without having to upgrade them in the near future.

I would look at one of these two motherboards and RAM:

GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P Motherboard - $140

The GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P Motherboard will only support up to the Phenom II 925 Quad-Core processor.

Crucial 2 gigabyte (2 x 1GB) DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) RAM - $28

Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P Motherboard - $110

The GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P Motherboard will support up to the Phenom II 940 Quad-Core processor.

G.SKILL 4 gigabytes (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) - $43

Ok I think I have this all sorted out. If in fact I go with AMD for my build (hopefully this summer if I can get the money) I will use this motherboard RAM combination.

By using these parts I will be effectively "future proofing" my build to a degree? I need to do my research on AMD parts and things like that so I can be more literate on this subject :D

There is no such thing as "future proof" with computers. You will be buying very good parts for system that should likely give you good processing power for more than three years.

The AMD Phenom II 810 Quad-Core is a great processor and an excellent choice for a build.

This summer??
You are asking optinion for this July??
Come back later when you get the money!!
The technology is moving so fast and we couldn't their if they are still the best combination in summer

May is far out as well in terms of computer technology. Prices will drop, new things will come out, etc. You should wait until you plan on buying it within 1-2 weeks.
