CPU? Motherboard?

I was playing a game on my custom rig, that i've had for two years now, (dont have time to say what i have in it currently) and while playing the fans were going pretty serious to cool it down, and i started getting the good ole smell of hot computer parts. before i knew it, my computer shut down, and wont turn back on... please help.. here are the symptoms...

While the coard is plugged in, the green light on the motherboard is on, so i'm just assuming the PSU is OK.

that is all. the computer doesnt turn on at all. I'm really hoping it's not either my CPU or Motherboard. How would i go about finding out if it were either of these?

Also, i took everything apart, even took out the processor. When i got the processor, i was told by the instructions it didnt need any thermal paste, because it already had a pre-layer. now that i have officially taken it out, do i need to apply some? or will it not make a difference if i just, put it back on?

You will need to reapply thermal paste.

Just because the light on the motherboard is on doesn't mean the PSU can power up the system.

Please post system specs and more importantly PSU brand and model.
 
MOTHERBOARD: ASUS P5E-VM DO supporting 45nm CPU..

CPU: Intel QX6850? Quad core extreme... i think 3.2ghz?

CASE/PSU: Apevia X-QPack2 case, 500 watt psu. Case is brand new. Had to replace my old one.

GRAPHICS CARD: ATI Radeon 4850
 
If you have both, a lint free cloth and some 99% isopropyl alcohol.

Otherwise just use tissues or something.

Oh and you only need a small amount of thermal paste, rice grain sized at maximum.
 
thanks for getting back to my post so fast linkin. have any opinions on what i should be checking for? i'm putting everything back together now to see what happens.
 
Make sure your motherboard standoffs are in the case. But I wouldn't think it was that because only recently you had this problem.

Try running with minimal hardware (eg one stick of Ram, one HDD, integrated video if any) and see if still happens. If not, add a stick of ram, another hard drive, or the graphics card and see if it happens again. rinse and repeat.
