hi i got a new mobo and bought a cheapy cpu because i ran out of money and now it won't start up. can someone tell me if its not compatible and if that could be the problem?

the cpu is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=300283256381

Intel Pentium 4 CPU (only no box, heat sink, etc) with the following specifications:

Model: SL7PW
CPU Speed: 3.2GHz
Bus Speed: 800
L2 Cache Size: 1 MB
LGA775
with hyper-threading and execute disable bit.

and the mobo is:

I would think it would work, though its not listed as a supported CPU on MSI's website.

Have you made sure that everything is seated properly, re-seated the heatsink?

ya i've reseated everything several times.. but when i go to push the power button it only barely flickers on then just shuts back off... and i can only get a flicker out of it very rarely. i know its not the psu because i've done the paperclip test and it turned on. i tried the vid card out on a different computer so i know that works.. the ram cpu and fan/heatsink are the only other new things... i kinda doubt its the ram but i guess it could be? for a while i could turn it on and it would run but nothing would come on the screen. i came back the next day and now it just flickers on and goes back off.

I think it be easier to start with easy things. Like check your ram. Take it out and put it back in.

I remember once my computer wouldn't start and it was because my ram somehow got loose or something.

I would think that the CPU is compatable and would work. Like said before i would try to test the CPU in another board. I mean you did by the CPU off of ebay did you not?

yes i sadly did by the cpu off ebay just kinda as a getmeby cpu... but now i'm thinkin i'll have to figure somethin else out.. i'm on a real tight budget right now tho :( so i hope i can get this to work

maybe the cpu is fried, send it/her back and get your money back!

save and buy something like a E2180

Have you made sure all of the mobo connections are plugged in tightly and not loose? I know it sounds dumb, but I just made that mistake about a month ago with a friend's computer. It sounds like a power issue to me rather than a CPU issue.

found something else.. i'm looking at the manual for my graphics card and it came with a 2 four pin to 1 six pin connector to hook it up to the psu. The problem is on the manual is says xfx does not support the use of two 4 pin to one 6 power cable converter for these graphics cards. does this mean i need a better psu?

when I put my machine together my comp did the exact same thing. I had a 6pin power cable plugged in backwards(wrong end in psu connected to gpu). I noticed it was backwards because it was labled "pci-e" on the end that was connected to the psu. The cable was modular and the non-modular power cable had the pci-e lable on the other end. Any way, unplugged it from both, swapped it around and booted right up.

my gpu takes 2x6 pin power cables

my gpu takes one 6pin connector. but my psu doesn't have a 6pin connector so it has an adapter that takes two 4 pin connectors on one side and a 6pin on the other. so do i plug both into the 4pins? cause the diagram shows that as a bad connection.
