CPU+OC advice?

I'm building a new computer and I just bought a.... i know, 'outdated' socket 478 motherboard. Actually,it's ok because once I build this computer I'll have no intentions for future upgrades until I build my nexct one. The motherboard I bought is an ASUS P4P800SE here is the link: http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4p800se/overview.htm
The mobo supports 3.2+ GHZ clock speeds.

I need advice on which Intel CPU to buy. I will be using this computer for multi-tasking, video editing and current 3D gaming. Also, for example, could a 3.2 GHZ P4 chip be safely overclocked and make a notable improvment? If so, what kind of cooling system would I need?

Thanks...

i run that same board with a prescott 3.0
it performs well

i tried Ocing on stock cooling and could barely get 10%

i now have a silent tower heatsink so well see what i can OC

id recommend staying away from the prescott

I wish I had
mine was always hott and the extra fans i had to run were noisy

ok nm i guess now i am happy with it

i took quite a few of the fans out and now im idling at 36 36

with just 2 case fans and its alot quieter

so if your going prescott get the thermaltake silent tower for 45$

otherwise deal with noise and heat

Great HSF, I have the same one on my AMD Athlon 64 3000+ i had it oc from 1.8 to 2.9 at 26c. The silent tower heatsink is in my opinion comparable to watercooling.

I have read that the thermaltake silent tower hsf supports intel cpu's up to 3.2 ghz. What are the odds I'll get good temps by overclocking past this?

i think pretty good

I dont see why the silent tower wouldnt be good past 3.2

im running in on my 3.0

and i used to idle rediculously high with stock cooling

like in the mid 40s

then somewhing strange happend and it started idling in the 50s

so i bought the silent tower

and itll idle as low as i can get the case temps to
keep in mind this is a prescott

i let it run last night and woke up this morning to see
idling at 33 cpu and 33 case

the case has 2 exhaust fans no intake

there are holes for the intake fans (6 of them) but i unplugged the fans that were there cause they were damn lound and not doing anything

the hottest ive been able to get this thing to so far is 46
and that was during a edonkey download and defragging one of my hard drives
while running a torture test and downloading a new virus deffinition on norton

along with surfing the internet

point is the silent tower is a pimp

i have never used anything other than stock and this so my oppinion may be worthless
