cpu or ram??

i'm considering upgrading my socket478 p4 1.8ghz to a higher speed cpu i had considered upgrading the same family pentium.....but it's too expensive but celeron is much cheaper i only had enought money to go for celeron D around 2.8ghz same L1 and 2 as the current one would it be faster/slower because its celeron , pc spec below

my friend told me that i should upgrade ram instead of a newer/faster cpu. any recommendation?

If you want to upgrade the CPU, go with a P4. Celerons are crap, total wasted money. Save your money and get a P4

That not always true the best cpu in the world wont make any difference if you dont have enough ram. for example running windows xp with 128 ram. That might be a extreme case but I acturally knew someone doing that and then he ask me why his computer was sooooo slow.
 
Whoa, people, he's got 512MB of RAM which is more than sufficient .... the problem is getting more RDRAM -- its expensive and not future compatible
 
unless I read that wrong hes got 768 (2x256, 2x128) and yet it says DRAM size 512...how does CPU-Z read the dummy RD sticks?

sorry, but i want to put my 2 cents in.. hehe!! i say u go for an AMD XP CPU.. ull have to get a new MoBo.. and just start off runnin 512MB (2x256), till u can double it... thats my thoughts!! sorry if it stinks..
 
Uh why? You'd be scrapping CPU, mobo and RAM for a non-top-notch setup ... at least if you stick with intel, you only have to replace the CPU :)
