CPU Overheating - I Messed Something Up!

Well, I was bored tonight and was browsing youtube and saw something about thermal paste for CPUs. So I removed my CPU's heatsink to see if my CPU had such paste on it. After looking, I simply replaced the heatsink and powered on my computer. Well, then my computer started shutting down randomly. I checked in the bios at the CPU temp and saw that it was extremely high - climbing up to over 100 after which the computer would shut off again. What could I have done? I don't really understand how anything I did could have effected the temperature in such a way.
 
Thanks for your quick reply Joh06937. I do remember the paste looking very dry so I think you're right about that. I will order this ASAP. Something else: I just noticed that I did not have the heatsink very secure. I just secured it and the difference in temperature is quite surprising! It's now sitting at about 68 C. I didn't realize that it could cause that huge of a difference. But I still think this is higher than it was so I will get that paste for sure. Thanks!
 
yeah i nice and snug contact is pretty important, and so is the paste. are you familiar with how to put paste on and how to clean the old stuff off?
 
I wasn't familiar with anything to do with paste until I watched the videos on youtube about it. The video says to remove the paste with rubbing alcohol and q-tips. As for applying it, it says to put a pea-sized dot in the middle and spread a thin layer with a card. Is this correct?
 
pretty much, yeah. i always use coffee filters though since you want something lint free when rubbing the surfaces (not sure if q-tips are but if they are, they should be fine).
