CPU Overheating

I built a computer last week and it worked properly until yesterday, when the cpu started to overheat to 75 C while i played Fifa 08. I reapplied the thermal paste and Fifa was working fine but when I turned on Fifa 08 again today, the temperatures rose to 85 C and the computer shut off. Why is this keep happening?

I applied 1/4 of the tube each time. It was well spread and everywhere equally. Maybe the thermal paste was already applied to the heatsink and some special procedure needed to put that on? I applied some on heatsink and well as some on the cpu.
 
You only need a rice size grain, I think you used too much. What you should do is take the heat sink off wipe all the paste off the heat sink and CPU with rubbing alcohol carefully and put less on and spread it evenly. Maybe take a picture before and after so we can see.

The MB temperature should give a good indication if the case is adequately cooled (or case temperature if you have that). Make sure the case fans are blowing in the right direction. The PSU fan/s will be blowing the right way but make sure the PSU is correctly oriented. Check your CPU fan speed if you are overheating.

If you put paste on the CPU (not necessary) you are running the additional risk of static damage.

If you are going to use 1/4 tube of thermal paste, I hear it's better between two slices of bread!
 
Although it's definitely too much paste, I'm thinking it may be the heatsink not seated completely.

Did you make sure each connector is down into the motherboards hole, and then each one clicks in?

With that said, your PC would not shut off from 85c temps. And although 85c sounds like an inferno, it's actually within intel spec. 85c is the core temp, not the CPU's actual temperature.

With all I7's, I highly recommend a better than stock cpu cooler because I7's all run hot even at stock speeds.

What is you ambient room temperature?

.25 of the tube is too much thermal paste and don't spread the TIM yourself and let the HSF spread it.

Do not lift up the HSF once place on the CPU.It will cause formation of air-bubbles.
Use the guide given above on how to apply TIM.

as 87dtna said all the screws should clip in properly and the HSF should be seated properly.
And after doing all that,
Also try running prime95 torture test and check the temperature if it goes till 100 then try to RMA the chip.
