CPU Overheating

My cpu just started overheating, I can't even get windows loaded, and the computer powers down, the only change I've made is a new power supply, and the cpu fan works fine. anyone have any idea why this would just randomly start happening?

What are the temperatures? What speed is your CPU Fan spinning at? Try setting your BIOS (if you can get into it) to "failsafe defaults".

at bios it had the temp up over 90c, cpu fan is running just over 1600rpm

Yikes!! Something is definitely wrong here... Make sure you didn't nudge your CPU Fan at all. Is it secure? Touch the heatsink and feel how hot it is.

This is quite a strange one... :/

If u download speedfan you can watch the temparature of your PC and you could take necessary action wen the tem goes up. I think we could adjest the speed of the fan.

What socket processor is it? If it's LGA775, then my bet would be one (or more) of the 4 notches came unhooked, and it causing the heatsink to tilt, thereby not covering much of the processor.

definately agree with omega..... double check that your heatsink is seated properly and that you didnt use too much thermal paste.

i took of the heat sink of my graphics card and put a pci fan below it it read it was 80celsius but when i took it out it was very cool and nothing was even warm but after i put the fan on it read 42c. wierd. and the pci dual fans i have are pretty powerful

hmmm.... interesting. maybe your sensors are no good. you can buy sensors and thermal probes that you actually mount on the motherboard where you want them..
