CPU ?...Pic ->

When I opened up my parents Dell 4700 for the first time, there was this large green object over the CPU I believe. I assume its some sort of heatsink as the end of it has a fan that blows out the back of my PC. I've never seen one like this and was wondering the advantages of it. Is it expensive? Overated? :)

It's a sort of wind tunnel to help keep the CPU cooler and prevent the heat entering the case. That way things stay cool (should stay :cool: ). I have the same kind of thing on my old PII PC. Nothing expensive though.

JAN :D

So compared to just a regular Heatsink for a CPU, is this wind tunnel a better buy? Is it something to consider when purchasing my next CPU?

lol.. to put it simply NO, dells are mass produced and most of thier parts arent even available. Im not even sure what is underneath that thing, it may even have a heat sink. Anywayz, Ive never seen one of those things in a custom built CPU nor have I seen them for sale so its not really an option. I just stick with thermaltake for my cooling stuff, they are really good as far as im concerned( havn't given me or my computer problems). It may be a air blower which simply blows the hot air out of the case to cool the proccessor. I just bought one for my case which is essentially supposed to fit over a heatsink and take the hot hair and pump it out. Although it didnt really work out like it was supposed to I am using the heatsink fan( lol i didnt realize it when i baught it) to blow massive amounts of air in my case and just have the blower pushing massive amounts of air out of the case. It came with a coolio fan speed dial too. Enough about me, just dont even worry about that stuff, its just another product of mass produced junk.

OK, but...

hmm...

the duct fan is actually an intake fan, it brings outside air in and blows it over the heatsink on the CPU. They are common on HP and Dell P3s, and allow them to save money by not putting a case fan on

Rather its a tunnel to focus the outbound stream of air to grab warmer air from around the CPU and exhaust it directly

There is a regular heatsink under that piece of plastic

They exist ... usually hard to find as performance users usually eithet get better HSF/fans or go exotic

A few of them are the other way around (the way its supposed to be) and have the duct work for output

on my Dimension 2300 the fan is an exhaust fan and the ducting somewhat seals off the heatsink from the outside world and then exhaust air out of the case by blowing it over the heatsink...it works, but i dont much care for it.
