CPU problems

Hi all,

Something is really wrong with my CPU. It is running non-stop and when I go into task manager it says that it is at 100% all the time. Then I go to performance and it says that "system" is taking it all up. It is constantly running at 85-100. I have no idea what to do, but whatever I do I need to get it done before something burns up. Help!!!
Thanks

Don't worry, nothing is going to burn. I think you have a virus or a worm running which eats up all the CPU processing, that's why you can see 100% taken. Scan it with your Antivirus, and if this didn't help, re-install windows again after you delete the current version you have of course.

Are you talking about the system idle process? If so everything is fine.

% System Idle Process Usage = % Unused CPU Usage

Time to reformat there buddy.
Always suggesting the most extreme? Formatting should usually be one of the last alternatives. One might not want to reinstall just about everything.

No, it is not the system idle process, just system. Thanks for the comments guys. I scanned a while back but I guess I am do for another one.

Agreed... Formatting is one of the best things you can do to make a comp run faster/better, but is not always nesessary
Not really. There is no need to format unless you have something on your hard drive that absolutely cannnot be gotten rid of....

Basically, like Tweaker said, it is the System Idle Process. I doubt that you can disable it, but you can try. Even so, there is no problem with it, it runs on every computer

system idle process is one thing, system is something totally different. i have the system under processes as does every computer, but mine runs 00 cpu and 50k mem usage

i have the system under processes as does every computer
Every computer doesn't, in fact no computer has an Idle Process. It comes from the OS, and for windows boxes only the ones running a windows NT derivative have the idle process.

Hey guys. I did a scan and came up with nothing. I have Norton ust FYI. I still have the problem. Is there anything else you guys think I should try. It started a while after I installed the Service Pack 2, I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Is the system usable, if system is eating up all cpu cycles then all other apps should grind to a halt. Is this happening?

Formatting is sounding like a good opion here
