CPU / RAM issue

CPU Intel Core i7 950 @ 3.07GHz (Bloomfield 45nm Technology)

when in my bios on the ram speed settings it says locked cpu can only take 800 or 1066.. is there a way to unlock the cpu to allow me to use the full speed of my memory?

When you enter the bios, the next tab over is the ''AI tweaker''....under that menu scroll down until you hit ''Dram frequency'', you should be able to set it to 1600 there.

yea i have done that but when in windows using piriform speccy when i view my ram it says its running at 800MHz 7-9-7-21 ... so do you reckon thats wrong? or is something else the problem?

edit* another quick question when OCing how high is safe when setting voltage on CPU and RAM?

Ram is Double Data Rate (DDR), so 800mhz is really 1600. Your ram is running at 1600 :)

For a 24/7 overclock? I wouldn't recommend more than 1.35v on the CPU and for the ram just whatever it's rated at maybe a hair more. Most are rated around 1.65v, you can easily run 1.70 if you NEED too but I can't really see you needing too.

Remember, overclocking the CPU will overclock the ram with it, so set your ram to 1333 or less (which will show up in the OS as 667) before you start overclocking.

You should really run the minimum voltage needed for a given overclock. Most I7 950's will run right around 1.30v for a 4ghz overclock. Give or take some depending on how good of a clocker you got.

oohhh okay.. smacks head* and thats a relief was wondering where i'd gone wrong  :)

yeah i was planning on doing a 24/7 , air cooled (well for now at least) i won't alter them drastically (Y) was just checking before i go play around with settings :) how easy do you think it'll be to over clock my processor to 4GHz?

cheers for replying!

Make sure turbo is on (multi set to 24)
Turn EIST, Cstate, and C1E off.
Set ram to 1333
ram voltage to 1.65v
set base clock to 167
set Vcore to 1.30
Make sure load line calibration is enabled (no Vdroop)
Set VTT (QPI) voltage to 1.30

That should do it. Turbo is a 24 multiplier on the 950, so 24x167 is 4ghz.

Next step is to test stability. Download ''Real temp'', CPUz, and Prime95. Run Prime95 smallFFT for atleast an hour to check stability. Watch your temps, anything under 90c is OK just for this test. It's far more stressful on the CPU than you could ever put on it doing normal tasking/gaming.
I'm guessing that load line calibration will take your CPU Vcore to ~1.32v or so(watch Vcore in CPUz to see how much it ramps up under load). This is *probably* more than necessary for 4ghz. If the test proves to be stable, take Vcore in the Bios down to 1.275 and repeat the stress test.

works fine =D i think when i get around to putting on my new heatsink for cpu i'll try push it a little further. What do UCLK and QPI link date rate do? and should i have these turned on or off Intel® TurboMode Tech, CPU Spread Spectrum and PCIE Spread Spectrum?

thanks :)
