CPU Randomly Runs at Full Load

If your explorer.exe file was damaged or crosslinked with something like another file that loads along with Windows that would be one cause. AMD has released special fixes for some problems seen at times with their line of cpus. The only thing that should be high when no games or apps are running is the system idle process by itself. Made any recent software changes?

Oh, and just so everyone knows, if explorer.exe was cross-linked with another file it wouldn't even run. Your explorer would be constantly crashing. The taskbar wouldn't even show up, and neither would My Computer. Also, you would be told there was an error when you tried to boot into Windows.

Sooo... You can rule that one out.

i have a similar problem, im studying for some med school shit right now...or taking a break rather..when i get home ill post my CPU usage issue too. before i do that im 100% sure that its not explorer.exe and it happens when im away and i come back to see my CPU temp up from 41 C to 60-64 C . i believe the last time it happened, it was the task msmsgs.exe that was going nuts. i ended task and it just popped back up. three times in a row (it took about 5 minutes to close it three times in a row) then i restarted the computer. ill give more details when questions are asked or when i get back to my comp a little later.

Don't be surprised when you find out otherwise. When you have a bad install of some program and use the task manager where you see explorer.exe running high you'll reconsider that one. It happens in the registry there. That's when you use the system file checker to repair any system files corrupted by something else.

I'll be very surprised. If you knew what cross-linked files were and what caused them you would know that it would be impossible for explorer to demonstrate that characteristic in that event.

Just another wild goose chase.

In your mind only apparently. :P Read the HiJack This log at one forum!

At another? "It turns out that i had a %@$^LOAD of crosslinked files on my harddrive. Which is odd, I guess I might have to reinstall my XP anyway."

One problem solving seen at Adobe Reader's support page discusses

15. Repair and defragment hard disks.

The Error-checking tool repairs bad sectors, lost allocation units and file fragments, cross-linked files, and invalid file names. To access the Error-checking tool, double-click My Computer, right-click the desired hard disk, and choose Properties from the pop-up menu; in the Local Disk Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab, and then click Check Now in the Error-checking section.

Your links don't prove your case. At all. For instance, in the first one nowhere is it cited that a cross-linked explorer.exe caused the problem. In fact, the second link completely disproves your case. The cross-linked file was unreadable, which only serves to prove mine.

I have a problem with my Windows XP, it starts up and whenever i run certain programs, it will say that yada-yada/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5/index.dat is corrupt and unreadable.

Have you ever seen an unreadable file execute? I haven't.

ROFL ....where should I start?!

The easy way or the hard way? One faster method if you have an XP installation cd onhand is the system file checker. You simply type "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt off of the Start menu and press the enter key to start that running. Often it will request the installation disk for the file verification process plus any repair or replacement of system files needed.

The "hard ways"?

How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP

Chkdsk (Chkdsk.exe) is a command-line tool that checks volumes for problems. The tool then tries to repair any that it finds. For example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors. To use Chkdsk, you must log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

You can also run Chkdsk from My Computer or from Windows Explorer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Eh.... Why go through the steps when you can reformat.... lol

If the system file checker that simply runs for several minutes doesn't correct the problem the best method to preserve the current installation and avoid a drive wipe when reformattting is the "install to repair" method outlined at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

This can save a world of hurt from wiping out a drive full of files you want to keep if you haven't backed them up fully. Plus it only effects the essentials where you often won't have to reinstall too much. I've done that a few times when something knocked out a few of the system files.

Too late, already reformated...... lol

Well, I really had nothing of value on my drive that I couldn't get from the internet. I just made sure that I zipped my music to a disk so I don't have to rip them again. The one thing I don't like about 'install to repair'-like utility that come with Compaqs is that it messes up some applications and games in the process......

With the exception of games and some applications, I already have my machine back to the way it was, maybe even better.....

Yeah, I took Vista off my machine the other night. Within a couple of hours I had XP back on with all the updates, a few programs and some other stuff. The fun part is watching how fast and smooth everything is.

ya, the only &!%*# was loading CS:S off of Steam because that takes HOURS, which meant I had to keep my compy on overnight..... stupid bright green LED light freakin lighting up the whole room........

Haha my PSU has a big blue LED light coming out of the back of it, and I use dto have the back of my computer pointing out right at my roommate's bed. Haha a 3 days later he had 2 towels hung up trying to block it. My bad :)

OOOH WELL! I simply put the beta version of Vista on a secondary drive instead of tampering with the primary. So far the only draw back with the latest release is that there is no drivers for MS optical mice! The ATI and Creative beta drivers saw no problems there. You would think MS would at least offer support for it's own hardwares when introducing a new OS?
