CPU running hot at first boot.

Hi ya people,

I just got done building my first computer. All seems to have gone well even with the rats nest I now call my computer, lots of damn wires in there.

I just booted the thing for the first time last night and everything got recognized alright and is working fine it seems. I haven't installed the operating system yet as I"m still waiting on it. The only proplem I noticed was the darnn cpu was running at about 52c after running for half an hour. This thing is just sitting there at idle with nothing running and no operating system and all fans at high.

I have an Thermaltake Xaser V Damier case with 5 fans, an ASUS "P5AD2-E Premium" i925XE MB, Pentium 4 550 3.4 GHz and a GIGABYTE 3D Rocket Cooler-Pro, Here
I have 3 temp sensors that came with the case and one is near the chip and it's showing 39c. The temp inside the case is about 26c. I'm using the hardware monitor in bios to view the chip temp. The bios is also showing that the MB's temp is 33c.

My house is heated at 70F so the temp inside my case is pretty close to ambient. I'm just wondering if the temps the bios is showing are accurate. There's about a 13 degree difference between the reading I get with the case sensor and the bios reading. The case sensor is as close to the chip as I could get it but isn't touching it.

I guess I might need to remount the HSF. I did use artic silver and spread it out evenly. Oh well, maybe it wasn't perfect. I was just wondering what you guys think?

Well, with Arctic Silver, just like any thermal paste, you only need a thin layer. Thicker the worser...:D

The BIOS could be wrong... You could try updating the BIOS version, but wait until you install an OS. Then install 'Probe V2.20.03' or something like that (a temperature software should come on the Driver CD with the motherbaord, atleast with my ASUS motherboard it did), and test it then. I'm thinking the BIOS is inaccurate but don't take my word for it.

I was going to wait until the operating system was installed before doing anything. My MB did come with paper telling me to update the bios, unfortunately, it was missing a page or two. Is it better to wait to update the bios till after you install the OS? I also put a small thin layer of actic 5 on, and spread it out evenly.

... wish I had that damn OS, I hate it just sitting there looking good.

No, not at all, but after you install the OS you can install a software application that can measure it too... Updating the BIOS isn't like updating your average anti-virus program, it's updating/changing the whole configuration. You usually only update the BIOS if there is something drastically wrong with the motherboard itself.

Anyway, once you get the program's results, you can compare the two. If they are the same then perhaps it's time to do something. Maybe try doing the HSF procedure over again...

I have the same MB and also have a Prescott from the new generation.
You probably know that ASUS sensors always add some 4-7 degrees celsius
Your temp is absolutely NORMAL for a P4 550 which is known as a hot processor.
After you'll install the OS you will probably get arround 70 degrees in burn.
Don't worry at all.
Now, you should follow Rambo's advise regarding Arctic Silver 5 only if you use a 3rd party cooler. If you use Intel's one, they already have a thermal pad.

Yes I did install a 3rd party cooler, a GIGABYTE 3D Rocket Cooler-Pro. It should cool better then the intell one I assume. I"ll see how it does after I install the operating system.

70 degrees in burn? That sounds hot to me. I can't imagine being able to overclock that chip with temps like that. Oh well, i'll find out soon enough after I check a few things after installing OS.

The BIOS is probably closer. 52C while high, isnt too bad if say your stress temp is like 60C

Updating the BIOS wont solve the heat problem if there is one :)

Id suggest you get a stress-temp and with those two numbers we can make a judgement call :)

Yes, waiting on the OS to do a stess test, hopefully it will work out.

I used like a pea sized amount of arctic silver, it was a very thin layer spread out evenly. It shouldn't be too hard to redo it if all else fails.
