cpu selection

i admit it, i am a noob. computer illiterate. all i know about cpu's is the speed in gHz, and apparently that doesn't matter too much. ive come to this forum for reccomondations and help on picking one out for the computer im builiding. all i know is the computer wants to be an ultra gaming computer, and i dont want some cheap CPU that'll be out dated in a month (which is hard with all the advancements). im willing to spend $100-200. help plz.
haha, thx.

I have a E6400 which is the next model up from the one 'm0nk3ys1ms' recommended its $220 at new egg and at www.tomshardware.com this was the best price and Overclocking CPU. they got it up to 3.8ghz. something like 81% increase in performance where the E6300 they got it up to 3.0ghz i think or something like that with somewhat 55% increase.

but if your not into overclocking then the performance that the E6400 wouldnt make much differance in comparison to the E6300 with its measly 250 ish mhz differance. for $37 less i would prob go for the E6300 if your not planing to overclock it but since your into gaming you want performance so at some point you'll prob want to overclock it so ... then go for the E6400 .. its hard to say up to u ..

I got my E6400 to 3.2ghz .. pretty easy.. no uping the voltage .. it wasn't quite stable when i ran stress test but stable enough to play games and run my general applications but some votage upping should fix that .. its currently running at 3.0 ghz no problem even under a stress test for 6 hours ... stock voltage so no life killing for my cpu.

OH and Intel is currently leading the performance race against AMD and there leading the price and performance race.

so i recremend one of the E6300 or E6400 nothing much else as there part of the top processor familys of Intel. with socket LGA775

ok, i dont plan on overclocking. and jw, say I have a game that recommends a cpu that runs at 2.5 gHz, if i buy a cpu that you recommended, could it still run the game?

It'll run fine. The speed they recommend is usually for if you have a Pentium 4 processor. A core 2 duo does more work per clock, so does not need to operate as fast to do equal/more work then a higher clocked Pentium 4.

Don't worry These are top of the line processors, well bottom of the top of line family should i say(which is still pretty good). I'm really happy with mine. Even when i did run it at stock speed it was fine, which was only for like a week. They should take any game you throw at them, that out and prob will come out this year. The main thing you need to worry about is your graphics card, if you intend to play games that is.

I recommend a 8800gtx is top of the line but u need the $$$ next down the 8800gtx which will also still cost a bit .. the 7900's series ... is good cards 7900gt is good for price and performance i run a 7900gtx which i got for a bargin but if i didn't get it for what i got it for(not stating price cause i live in new zealand and will just confuse everyone) i woulda gone for the 7900gt .. the gs version is same family but just a little underclocked. the 7600gt' s are the best buy for price and performance(what i recon there dead cheap but still got some go in them). but there getting mid range graphics, if your skimp for cash then maybe go for something like a 6800gt or a 6600gt they were once top of the line(but wasn't everything else) i donno how much they go for now days but there still ok i guess but 1 card i dont recommend is the 7300 series... they ment to be budget, but half decent cards .. but i think they just turn out to be crap they perform worse than the 6600gt and there more expensive ... all these are direct x 9 cards only the 8800 are direct x 10 capable if u want a direct x 10 card you'll have to wait until the other 8 series card comes out or when ATI releases there x2K series cards.....

I'm not a huge fan of buying ATI cards, I have nothing against the company or productions or quality, its just in price and performance i think Nivida just does a better job.

ok, say i purchased this cpu. what motherboards would support this chip? would any as long as they had the right slot size?

OK, so any of those with core 2 should support that cpu. um, im willing to pay up to $200 on a motherboard. as long as the motherboard has a pci express slot, can support my cpu, and can hold up to atleast 2 gB of ram, it'll be good. is that all i should be worried about?

looks like itd suit my needs, except

PCI Express x16 2
PCI Express x1 2
PCI Slots 2

i only need 1 PCI Express x16, and as far as i know, i dont need PCI Express x1 or any PCI slots, so i dont want to be paying for what i dont need.

There expansion slots hens the expansion if u dont have them u won't have a place to put ur expansion stuff in ... + even if u didnt eva want to put any thing in there, i don't think there are may mobo's out there that dont have many expansion slot's .. i can only think of a ABIT one and that board is expensive as well... , that is a really good board one of the best on the market ...

I have a P5W DH DELUXE by ASUS i bought this board over that one EVGA one cause this is a bit of everything gaming, digital home and workstation... , the EVGA was made for gaming... and overclocking.

and not any of those core 2 should support ur CPU, they do support ur CPU if not then u have something wrong with ur mobo and u should ask for a refund or replacement lol

You really cant go wrong with extra pci slots.. If you're on board sound was to go out you could buy a pci sound card and fix the problem.. If your onboard nic was to go out you could do the same.. As for the PCI x1's I've never used them myself.. My motherboard I have right now has 1 PCI-E, 1 PCI x1 and 5 reg PCI slots..

If you ever plan on buying an addon card for something, you will need those slots. And every motherboard has them, you cant find any without the slots.

If I lived in america I would deffinately go for that CPU and that MOBO if I was hardcore into gaming, I use my rig for music, movies and gaming mainly so I went with the P5W DH deluxe very nice board and + the eVGA NVIDIA nForce 680i seemed to be way expensive in New Zealand?? donno y... my p5w dh was 400nzd and the NVIDIA nForce 680i is 600nzd but in us ur NVIDIA nForce 680i is cheaper than ur P5W DH deluxe .. ?? random .. but yea I'm more than happy with my P5W DH deluxe... but if they were the same price i think i woulda had a problem choosing
