CPU shutdown temp

I have an intel P4 2.8Ghz Prescott core, as you can probably tell from my signature. About 30 mins ago my Pc shutdown unexpectadly, i was playing UT2003 at the time.

We are in a bit of a heat wave here and i checked my CPU temp in BIOS as it was restarting.... I almost fell off my chair, a staggering 79'c, yes i said celcius not farenheit.

All im asking is, is ther an in built protection insode the CPU that shuts itself down at a certain temp (80'c would make sense i suppose). The temp shutdown feature in BIOS is disabled but i was wondering if there was one built in to the CPU aswell???

Any ideas, very grateful?

Yeah

That's to high. You should definitely consider a new cooling solution now. As to the shut down protection, I think it all has to do with the BIOS settings. I may be wrong however.

dont prescotts throttle the speed automatically? sounds like you might need to reseat your heatsink or something
 
I tried that eralier today, and respread some new artic silver grease. cleaned out the dust from heatsink anf fan, nothing still around 78-79
 
very odd... you could try and see if there's a bios update around. i had problems like that with my abit mobo and athlon 64.
other than that i can't see what the problem is. i have read that it takes a while for arctic silver to "bed in".
