CPU spec advice?

hi there,

First of all i have to say that i don't know much about CPU specs...
however I am not completely computer iliterate :P but for the tasks im trying to run on my laptop at the moment, lets just say its time for an upgrade.

I would like a computer mostly for graphical design - programs such as maya, photoshop, vegas etc. now with maya on my laptop frame rendering time is horrible and i cannot navigate through my project without serious lag. With photoshop i find trying to manipulate to many pixels at once also causes serious lag.

atm my im using 2007 toshiba satelite windows vista.. im not sure what model or anything but i can get the exact specs later - im away from my laptop right now.

my question is: what sort of RAM, Processor, graphics card etc would i need to EASILY handle tasks mentioned. thanks in advance :)
 
what is you budget and what all will you need.
would you need a new monitor and keyboard as well??
and what other peripherals you will be needing?
also do you have an os or not
 
i have keyboard, mouse, moniter and all cables - i would just need the actual computer. budget $1000 - $1500, id be willing to pay more if it was worth it. i do not have OS

i found this online, i think its more than what id need and its kinda past my budget. what do you think of:

The AMD config will be 100 Bucks cheaper both will come around 1600$ - 1500$ with OS
 
one of my brother's friend is into 3d and all that stuff and he told me that maya and other 3d rendering application actually use his core i7 920 properly and the usage is like 70%+

And you always can overclock it since i have also listed a CPU cooler with which you will be able to overclock it to nearly 4GHz

I listed a bigger PSU because then you will be able to go CF later and increase you computers performance
 
:) ... what does overclock meen ? i think i know but im not quite sure. you definatly seem to know what your talking about :P so running at 70% whilst rendering thats good right? or not? ... sorry for all the questoins, its alot of money to be spending and id like to research as much as i can before investing in a new computer
 
Dont worry about the question I always grow crazy before i am about to buy anything.

It is really good i7 930 is an awesome processor.
and I really recomend you understanding what you are buying before you buy it so research about it alot

and then checkout the latest benchmark results comparing the latest high end CPUs GPUs with each other and then listen to the recomendations from the people in forums and then make an informed decision

since you are investing this much on your CPU you should know all about it
there are many alternatives for the basic set itself like
you can go with
Core i5 750
Core i7 870
AMD Phenom x6 1099t
core i7 930
AMD Phenom x4 940

the main point is you should be happy with what you have invested in and also understand it to some extent
 
ok so i was looking at the i7 930 quad core and in found the Intel® Core™ i7 960 Quad Core Processor (3.2GHz, 8MB Cache) to be significantly better for $400 more... i know its probably more than what i need but im wondering if it will save me from having to upgrade in another few years from now. what do you think of the 960? also i was looking at 9gbRAM rather 6GB - is there much difference for %33 increase??
 
nope core i7 930 can be overclocked to the clock of that i7 960 so no use buying a 960 anyother i7 processor except the i7 930 and 870 arent worth the difference
