cpu speed problem

Hi!
I recently bought Compaq sr1850nx with AMD 64 3700+ processor from Fry's
The specifications say the processor speed is supposed to be 2.2 ghz, but whenever I try to play computer games, this window pops up and says that the computer only has 1 ghz and can't support the game.
I tried searching in the internet about it, but all I could find were things concerning cpu clock speed, overclocking, and cool'n'quiet technology etc... And I don't a really know what any of these are...
Can somebody please tell me why my computer shows it has 1ghz instead of 2.2ghz? And how I could fix it?

well, i used cpu-z and it says,

core speed: 994.7 MHz
Multiplier: x 5.0
Bus Speed: 199.0 MHz
HT Link: 994.7 MHz

so i guess the true processor speed is about 1 ghz... but why did the computer say the processor has 2.2ghz?
 
Please specify the Processor name, Code Name, Package, Technology and teh Voltage and the specifications, etc.

He doesnt need to, his multiplier is set to X5, it should be at 10. If you can get into the BIOS, try upping the multiplier to 10 instead of 5, and it will jump to 2.0GHz.

should be set to x11 then, since the 3700+ is a 2,2GHz processor iirc.

i dont think they disabled to multpilier in the bios tough. ofcourse the fsb will be locked, but mainly you can change the multiplier ( because you cant set it higher than the 'official' processor speed anyway )
tough, i agree with you, disabling cool'n quiet could also help.
 
My compaq had absolutely no options to change the speed of the processor... I think it was a 17xx, but it too had a 3700. Overclocking can void warrenties, so I don't see them allowing us to do so :P Unless it has something like the old Dell's had... A compatability mode which underclocked the processor to almost unusable speeds.
 
K, Disable Cool N Quiet For Now, Go to Bios, and Up Multiplyer to 10x or 11x for a lil quicker, Make sure u have suitable Fans installed too tho, Cooked Chips isn very fun (microchips that is)
 
thanks for all the reply.. but like some of you guys said i can't change the processor speed in bios... how do i disable cool n quiet technology?
 
In the bios as well. Or, I'm pretty sure there will be an uninstall for an Athlon 64 driver or something like that in Add/Remove that should also prevent the machine for switching speeds.
