CPU, temp, is this ok?

A quick question,

One of my computers running a AMD athlon XP Thoroughbred 2800+ is running at 70. This is when it is doing nothing.

Is this ok since it has a akasa cooler (http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/full/44945i0.jpg)

It has not been OCed

70C or 70F? in order of writing, thats really bad or really good.

If you are reading 70C with a good aftermarket cooler on it the thermal compound(white not Artic Silver) wasn't applied just right or you may have another problem to look at. On that model the max temp is between 85-90C. But that is still too high if that is not farenheit readings there.

Well, I have an Intel 2.8 GHz which operates 50-100% load at 50 C.
I go to their web site to find CPU max temp and go from there.

Ouch! Too hot to touch! My Athon XP3200+ hit the 85C mark lately when the fan on a Scythe Katana suddenly quit. Early last year the stock thermal pad(preformed garbage) saw 61C idle with 73C loaded with a game or other large app. Along with getting some of the "good stuff"(ARTIC SILVER 5 remember that name) you may want to look into a few different cpu coolers from Artic Cooling or Zalman to keep those temps down. Newegg has some good buys on AS5 to look while some cpu coolers can be looked over at http://www.coolerguys.com/socket7370a.html for your model cpu.

If you are running the stock heat sink/fan combo there the thermal pad is most likely the problem where that is letting go. That's a common problem with running stock. Time for a new cooling setup.

Ok time for a water cooling system only 70 Pound for 1, Pump 2, Radiator with fan 3, Tubes 4, CPU set and VGA i think.

I would have made a better rec at sending you to a place like http://www.coolerguys.com to look over some Zalman or Artic Cooling setups along with advice on using Artic Silver 5 and no cheap stuff to put a new one on. Water cooling setups are often time consuming and expensive due to how complicated they get. Plus if you don't get them seated properly they can leak on you. Instead of replacing an overheating bios chipset here I'm simply throwing in a new board + cpu to go with a new Zalman cooler.
