CPU temp jumps to 255 degrees C???

OK so i overclocked my E6400 from 2.13ghz to 3.0ghz just for a start. right i'm running. prime 95 atm been going for like 5 hours now. hasn't locked up or frozen up but wen i look at my tempture reader PC probe and AI booster (came with the mobo on the drivers and utilitys CD). they say 44 degrees(which is pretty normal under stress) but then randomly it jumps to 255 degrees C.. for about 5 seconds then drops back down to around 44 degrees is this the programs or ???

someone please help.

It's probably having an error. It's probably using 1 byte to store/display the temperature, and one byte can have 255 values. So it's not likely measuring 255C, and it's just jumping to the highest displayable value as an error.

If it were running that hot anyway, the motherboard's Automatic Shutdown features would kick in.

Either way, 255C isn't even a plossible temperature.
 
i think the case would have melted first, even if all the plastic parts were made of bakalite which is a thermosetting plastic with a melting point of about 250F which is i think around 120 oC
