You dont put the thermometer under the heatsink, put it on the heatsink somewhere if you really need it. There are plenty of Windows apps that will monitor CPU temps.

What program is good and where can I download or buy it? Which one is more accurate? The software or the case temp?

Soeed fan, not only gives you the speed of your fans, but it also reads any thermal diodes your motherboard may have, also most IDE hard drives have a temperature sensor and speed fan reads that too.

I too recommend this application for monitoring your hardware temps. I've used most of the recommended applications for monitoring your temperatures and I'd say that PC Wizard is by far the best. It shows a lot more information and offers many other features that the others, such as speedfan, doesn't. It's a lot more user friendly too.
