how u doin everyone i got the p4 2.66 ghz computer and i just got the new asus motherboard and my cpu is gettin pretty hot wut could it be, is my fan not strong enough, and is there anything i can do to keep the temp normal till i fix it. thanks

1) what exactly are the temperatures?
2) what sort of HSF do you have on there now? stock?
3) what are your other temperatures - case, ambient...?

i dont know to much about computers but i think the hsf is stock when i open the case i put a fan to the cpu and the temp stays pretty good

That could be a sign of poor air circulation in the case. How many case fans do you have and in what configuration? For that matter, what type of case is it? Also, what kind of temperatures are you seeing (both normally and when you blow a fan over it)?

i got a closed case its got a few little holes in the back and i only got one fan in there the temp runs at like 50 to 55 and this program came with the motherboard and when i check the temp the arrow is really close to the red but when i open the case and add a fan to it plus the fan on the cpu it cools down.

Definitely a circulation problem. 55C is a bit hot, but not dangerously hot. You should look into getting a few more case fans; try filling all the fan slots (assuming you have some, you didn't specify your case type). If its still pretty hot you might want to get a better HSF or inspect the one you have on there (ie if its well seated, using thermal paste, etc)

is there a stronger fan i could buy for the cpu, and is it ok for the pc if i leave the case open and put a fan to the cpu

Yes there is. A heat sink fan, HSF, is what the whole heat sink-fan assembly is called. However, buying a good HSF won't help at all if there isn't any circulation (technically it will add more heat both from the running motor and pumping work being converted to heat via viscous dissipation... but thats besides the point :) ) Anyway, just buy some more case fans, and yes its okay to have the case open with a fan on it but I wouln't recommend it as a permanent thing.
