CPU thermal grease

I was recently told that the grease that comes with the cpu when you buy it isnt so good, like it drys up quickly and doesnt transfer heat well. Ive already used the standard stuff though that came with my cpu, and am wondering if I should replace it, and how I can tell if it is no longer good?

My other question is how do you clean off the old grease on the cpu and heatsink safely, and what new solutions to use?

I use rubbing alcohol (70%), some people prefer 98% isopropyl but any high concentration alcohol works. Usually the stuff that comes with the stock heatsink isn't great but it works and if you don't take the heatsink off you don't have to worry about it.
