CPU time 50!!

Hi all

I have that weird problem with my CPU...

The CPU time NEVER goes above 50%, as if there was some kind of limitation due to some setting...

Some applications really go slow because of this (i guess)... it's not about the RAM memory, as it was 512 MB and i extended it to 1 GB, but no speed improvements have been noticed...

Anyone knows about it??

Thank you.

Do you have a dual-core processor or one with Hyper Threading? If you do, that would explain why it doesnt go much higher then 50%.

i dont think so, but how would i be certain anyway??

thank you

ur probably right...

i may have hyper threading...

after doing a search about it, i found that HTT make Windows see 2 processors while there is in fact only one...

I checked my Environment Variables, and the NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS variable has value 2, which confirms HTT...

Thank you very much Omega...

but i still dont understand why the CPU cant work at 100%??

If you're running an intensive program at 100%, the computer will think that only one core is being used, since most programs are only single threaded.

So Windows averages the usage of both cores, and thats why it sees it as 50%.

so HTT is synonym for core duo??

a friend says he has a core duo, but that when running programs, the task manager shows the CPU time goes over 50... like 87...

no... HTT is not the same as core duo... HTT means the processor can process several thread/process at the same time hence making it seems like it has more than one core... but in reality it still have only one core whereas dual-core processors, they have physically 2 cores to process applications...

hope this helps. :)

HT (Hyper Threading), is what Intel used in their newer P4 models, as well as a few Pentium Extremes. All it does is "simulate" a second core, by using the unused clock cycles to produce the 2nd logical core.

The Core 2 Duo is a completely different processor, and is a dual-core, meaning it has two processors in one CPU.

And the reason his goes over 50% is either because he runs alot of apps at once, or hes using a mutli-threaded app.

i've got a p4 with HT, and i can pin it at 100%, especially if something hangs or a driver crashes

my guess would be that windows just isn't showing your cpu useage correctly

is it running slower than usual or anything?

how can u define "usual" when u always had this processor?

it's not that it's slow, but seeing that a process only runs at 50 tops, i guess if it could run at a higher CPU time, it would perform much faster...

in my task manager panel, i get 2 different windows for the CPU performance...
