CPU upgrade advice, please.

Hi,
Humour me, please! A while ago I changed from Celeron to a Pentium 4 cpu and noticed a pleasing increase in speed; now, I've got another tower with an AMD Athlon 3000+ 2.17GHz cpu., on a Micro Star MS 6586 m'board. Could you tell me if there is a better one which would fit and would give some improvement? I know it dates back to 2001/2 but it pleases me for things not costing the earth.

It seems this may be an OEM computer such as Compaq or another store bought pc? We would need the brand and model number of pc to determine what cpu's it supports. Not getting many hits from the model number you gave.
 
Ok, there is a crapload of processors named Athlon 3000+, I am only seeing them in 2.0 ghz though

Edit: no hits on the mobo either

Look on E-bay. They have stuff that is better than either of your computers for around $45. You could install Linux Ubuntu version 10.04 for the operating system since the hard drive has been wiped.

I tried to search for your motherboard, but couldn't really find any useful info, such as the socket type. I'm no expert though, and hopefully someone else may be able to learn what your cpu upgrade options are.

That said, from my perspective, you seem to be more or less at the end of the road in terms of your cpu. Your 3000+ processor can definitely hold its own when it comes to single-core units. If you can upgrade it to a faster single-core, there won't be much of a difference.

Now, it would be a different story if you had a socket 939 motherboard and could pop in an Athlon 64 X2. I have a feeling your motherboard wouldn't support an X2 though. I'm thinking your next computer upgrade (at least cpu-mobo-memory) would be a good time to get all newer stuff. You can get that triple combination of components (brand new) for around $125 or so. And what you would get would absolutely crush what you have now. An AMD APU would even come with very nice integrated graphics. And while I could be wrong, I can't see any reason why you would need to replace your PSU. At least not if you stuck with the integrated graphics.

If you do end up deciding to buy new, just give the guys your budget, timeframe, and the particulars.
 
You will need to post the make and model of the actual computer for people to find any info on it.

msi are a company who in the past have made motherboards exclusively for computer manufacturers particularly medion, so the motherboards don`t actually exist on there own they are a part of a whole unit, and this has lead to problems with support, where msi don`t support it they only made for this company, the computer manufacturer don`t support it they say it`s part of our machine but it is an msi board.

That is why it`s near impossible to find info on the motherboards made for this reason.
 
i could not find a Micro Star MS 6586,the only board i could find was a ms 6585 but this board uses a P4 cpu and you said your number uses a amd cpu.
 
I think it's pretty clear by now that upgrading the cpu only would be the worst option. OP, your best bet is probably going secondhand, like Ebay or Craiglist, as others have said.

Hi, Thanks for your advice. I have a HP tower, from 2001, with an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.17 GHz chip. Could you please suggest a motherboard and chip which would be simply transplantable, without changing any other hardware, into my tower and would be inexpensive for a decent hike in performance?
