Old thread got out of hand.Okay, i was proboly going to get an i5 ivy quad when a thought came to mind, oc the the 965 or 4100 to 5 ghz with watercooling!Which one would be better for oc,a 4100 or a 965? ould it be a signifagant iprovment over an ivy 3 ghz quad?Would like one with everything included, and could you tell me what I need?No space issue, my case is super atx.

A 4100 should hit 5Ghz, a 965 might get 4.5 or 4.6Ghz. I'd recommend a 6100 at 5 if you can though. As far as performance, they'll still be behind probably but they'll do perfectly well for a nice chunk less.
 
It wont be a nice chunck less at 5 ghz with some fancy cpu cooler.I would perfer some crazy cpu cooler not wc.Any cpu cooler that would oc very high for $50 on a 6100?Would a oc 4.5 ghz 6100 beat an ivy i5 3.3 ghz?
 
i don't think so, especially when you can save and get a cooler for the i5 later on instead of replacing the whole thing and get an extra while out of it. And didn't answer the St. Louis question (there's a microcenter there).
 
Seriously, you seemed so concerned about your CPU.

To answer your question, an FX-4100 would be better for overclocking than an X4 965, and with water-cooling yeah you should probably be able to hit around the 5.0GHz mark, just make sure your voltages aren't too high.

However, if you can afford it, I'd recommend an i5 3450 to you (yes, it's an Ivy Bridge quad!) but if you can't afford it then the older i5 2300 or 2400 would still be good.

To put it simply:
Overclocking: FX-4100
Best you can afford: i5 2300 or 2400 or 3450
 
Yeah you can get the 2500K up to around 4.8GHz if you're careful and with the 212+ it should be OK. Liquid cooling on a 2500K would probably get it up about 5.0GHz and it would smack the FX-4100 over the head with a steel rod.

I'm going to agree with Jonny on the used/cheap 2500K and 212+ or liquid cooling recommendation. :)
 
What about an fx 6100 and a h60 watercolor? But does a Corsair hydro h60 include the resovoir? Also, could it go to 4.5 GHZ and above? And would a 4.5 GHZ wc 6100 compare to a i5-3450 at 3 GHZ?
 
H60 is about as good as a higher-ish end air cooler. It does not have a res like a custom loop it is on the ends of the radiator.

Edit: I would think that the H60 would be good for 4.5 but I have not OCed the Bulldozer chips. I know that they run hotter than the Intel chips. I guess for a reference I use the Xigmatek Dark Knight with my current setup and my i7 would spike at 90c in Prime 95. With the H60 it would hold pretty steady at 75c.

So how does it work? The cpu part goes on the cpu like a regular heatsink, the cooler connects to the radiator, am I correct? What does the radiator get filled with, water?How often does the it get refilled?
 
The fan is mounted behind the radiator as an intake fan but you can place it where you want really. I added a fan to mine and I have it setup as a push pull exhaust system.

Yeah 4GHz stable 75c mac at load but that is with the first gen Core i series. Sandy bridge is a lot cooler than the series that I have. An H60 would be able to get a 2500K to 4.5 and above fairly easily. Sorry if that was confusing.

Technically it's over 50 off cuz the 3570K costs 190 which newegg charges 250 for it so you're already saving 60, so 110 off really, but then tax will take some of those savings away, but still you save a ton
