CPU upgrade

Hello,

I have 2 questions, but before I ask, I am not even sure I want to do it, so you can surely help me with it too, by giving advice.

I might upgrade my CPU from a P4 1.7GHZ, to a P4 3.2E Prescott

1. Would I need to reinstall XP after doing that ?
2. Would my MSI 645E be able to take such a CPU.
3. What sort of performance increase would I notice ? (based on Tom's charts, it looks like quite a bit, but I am not sure)

A reinstall would most likely be needed. If your copy of XP is OEM, you may have issues activating.

also i dont think it would fit. Your mobo is socket 478 and nearly all the later pentiums are socket 775. only the very very first prescotts were made for it.

also i dont know if your motherboard supports HT. Dont think so.

It would be a performance boost though. Ive got one of the really late pentiums (cedar mill) and it kicks ass even today

How would I be sure of it ?

Even without HT, would the boost be a big one ?

As jd said, your motherboard most likely doesn't support HT, thus making your upgrade almost pointless. I highly doubt it'd even support a "newer" P4, they are hard to get ahold of and not having the full capability of the chip would make the performance mediocre for the price you pay. Wait until you can build a system, or buy a new mobo and processor combo.

hehe, I can build a new system, but I am trying to hold as long as I can...

On one side this computer can still handle what I NEED it to, on the other side I would love to build myself a computer that would be able to handle some gaming(which is very hard for this one).

Thanks for both your inputs.

Processor upgrades don't usually require a reinstall, unless you also switch out the mobo.

Yes, I would think so. HT only improved the processor's multitasking ability, and even as a logical single-core chip it's still kick your current CPUs butt.
