CPU Upgrade

I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU from a
AMD Athlon™64 X2 6000+ to a
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb
but I was wondering if my chipset (NVIDIA® GeForce® 6150SE)
will handle it or do I need to upgrade that too??

What is the MB manufacturer and model number?

Yeah that helped. Unfortunately, being as the MB is a proprietary ECS (ECS MCP61PM-AM) board, I can't find anything definitive about the CPU support in that system other than this:

# NVIDIA MCP61P/MCP61S chipset
# AMD AM2 Socket K8 Athlon™ 64 X2, Athlon™ 64, Athlon™ FX, and Sempron™ processors

I could not find whether the MB will definitively support the CPU you specified. EliteGroup does not list that board number and Gateway only lists the basic specifications on it.

Someone else may have better luck in the search.
 
Motherboards such as those tend to be rather non-upgradable beyond the manufacturers specs. Even if the hardware is similar to other motherboards and technically could support newer processors, the bios might be limited/unsupported past the maximum processor offered in that computer. It's really difficult to tell if it'll work or not without trying it, but if I had to guess, I'd say you'd need a new motherboard...
 
Thank you all for your good advice. I guess my next question would be does anyone have any suggestions on the kind of mobo I should get for that kind of processor?
 
Likely you are just going to have to get a whole new system, case, motherboard, RAM, central processing unit and several other needed components.

Original Equipment Manufacturers usually make their cases specific for their parts so you have to buy parts from them. You are likely going to have to buy a whole new case.

I would start by looking at the following core components:

Not the case much anymore...at least not from what I've seen. Last I saw, Dell used BTX and most all other companies used ATX. Worst case, they might have non-removable I/O panels.

BTW, skimming over the specs on Gatway's site, it apparently comes with 3GB DDR2. Getting a slightly older processor, the old RAM could be reused if desired.
