CPU Upgrading.. my Sony Vaio desktop

The thought of upgrading my CPU came to me (Figured it'd be nice to have when I get Half life 2). I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX580. I ran WCPUID and saw that I have a socket478 with a 400fsb so I was looking at those types of cpu's on newegg.
I found one that looks alright:

I'm new to CPU upgrading so I'm not sure what I need to do. I'm afraid that it might not be compatible and I also don't know the procedure to follow to upgrade it.

Current System:
1.8GHz P4 with 512MB RAM... and an ATI Radeon 9200 128MB (Also looking to upgrade that :) )

you will need to buy a seperate fan as that one doesnt come with one. dont try using your old one either...may not be fast enough to cope with the extra heat generated by the faster processor.
When upgrading:
open the case
locate the processor
unclip the fan/heatsink
lift up the socket arm
remove the old cpu
put in the new one making sure you have pin 1 in the right location (check manual)
put on your fan/heatsink
close up your case

hope i helped :)

One thing I'm afraid of is if it isn't compatible with it. Would it automatically detect that a new one is there? Would I need to update my BIOS? Also, I don't have the manual anymore since I bought this computer about 3 years ago so I don't know where pin1 would be. You think this one is compatible? Thanks for the help btw

it will fit, the orientation will be the same as the processor that's in the socket now. look for the cut/marked corner, it's usually by the load/lock lever

everything related to the CPU is detected by the bios

I meant the manual for the new processor, but its easy enough to spot anyway..its the corner with a little different coloured triangle on it. That should match up with the triangle on the cpu socket.
I dont think you would need to change your bios..I didn't when I upgraded this comp from a 1700+XP to a 2400+XP.

that fan is only compatible with higher speed processors...dont know whether that makes any difference (?)
I particularly like the P4E 2.8GHz...very nice cpu indeed.

hey, did you ever get that thing working with the new cpu. i've got a 2.6ghz that i can't get any faster that a 1.3. i used to be running that same 1.8 that you had. i've used both sony's and asus' bios updates with to no avail. noticed this was posted a year ago though... hopefully someone will get this.
