CPU usage at 100%!

I just put a new computer together, installed WindowsXP Pro, and am halfway through all of the updates, but I'm having some problems.

When I use any window scroll bars the CPU usage goes up to 100%. I've had my system freeze up twice now because of it.

Everything is fine as long as I scroll. very. slowly, but whether I use the wheel on my mouse or do it manually with the up/dn arrows, it moves all choppy.

This kinda sucks, because this new computer should be far better than my previous computer.

Here are the specs:
Biostar TForce6100-939 NVIDIA Socket 939 MicroATX Motherboard
AMD64 3500+
512MB DDR RAM
SounbBlaster Live! 5.1 soundcard
Antec 450W PS

I'm currently using the onboard video, because my video card hasn't arrived yet (Leadtek Geforce 7300GT DDR3).

I also just noticed that I can hear something in my computer sorta squeel quietly every time I scroll, but I don't know if that's normal or not. My case makes almost no noise (Antec Sonata II), so it might just be normal system sounds that I've just never noticed before. I doubt I'd hear it if I was using my cold case.

I appreciate any help figuring this out.

yea you need to install the video drivers. its moving all choppy and probably not using the gpu to process the video as much as it normally would.

geforce video drivers > windows video drivers.

That would make sense. I see there's a big, yellow '?' in device manager next to "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)", but I figured it would have installed the drivers from my mobo disk.

There's also one next to "Multimedia Audio Controller", but I have a sound card installed. Do I need to disable this or does it need it's drivers installed anyway?

I think I'm one of those people who knows enough to be dangerous, but not really enough to *actually* know what they're doing! I just hope I don't end up being a nuisance with a lot of repetitive questions.

Yes, it should have.

It sounds like something may have gone wrong with the motherboard drivers. Try installing them again.
edit: whoops, you have a separate sound card. Well it wouldn't hurt to try reinstalling.

Wow, I didn't realize how much that would help.

I finally got it to install the "multimedia audio device" drivers, but now I don't have any sound. At least my computer isn't crashing, though.
