CPU Usage going crazy

The other day I opened the task manager and noticed that my CPU usage was somewhat sporadic. Even though I only had Mozilla Firefox and AIM running it was constantly going between 0-2% of usage and all the way to 50%. After noticing this I closed AIM, since it's usually the closest thing to spyware/adware I have willingly on my computer, then closed firefox. It persisted.

It actually follows a regular pattern of staying at 0-2% for about a minute or so, spiking to 50ish% for a few seconds, then going back down, and repeating.

Obviously I'm concerned about this and want to know what exactly is going on. It..er..could just be a virus or something but I'm not really convinced since I've never had this kind of problem before and I'm careful about what sites I go to etc. Forgive me if the solution is really obvious or something; I wouldn't exactly call myself super technical.

You see the System Idle Process? How its on 99%?

Thats Normal. That doesn mean its Using 99%.

If Possible, Try and capture the image when the CPU is being used...

Ok..my computer just randomly shut off today for no reason, so I'm really starting to get concerned. I tried to update the pictures so they're more useful to you guys :S

The left screencap was taken a minute or so before the right one.

Yeah I was thinking that but I took the process list screencap right when it was spiking and none of the processes seemed to be using any CPU except the system idle process of course..which is confusing the hell out of me.

the best thing to do is to watch that processes list and see which of the processes is taking up your processor when it spikes like that

were you running anything at that time?

if your computer shut off for no reason then thats a whole new angle... whats yuor temps?
