cpu usage high when idle

i have a 3700+ with a rs480-m mobo and the cpu is like at 50% usage at idle and i cant figure out whats causing it, in task manager it says system idle process is using it :( also i just installed a 7300gs card and i think i installed all the drivers properly, have any idea what it could be?

The system idle process actually is there to protect the processor from "running wild" when there are no programs loaded calling for cpu time. Generally with nothing running you should see at least 99% being displayed in the task manager under processes. If you leave a system running too long while in the system bios the cpu will eventually overheat and burnout from running without this control inplace. Linux users beware. Linux doesn't have this.

that just normal to have idle process at 50% if your not opeaning any programs, you must have atleast 100% if idle if you have a fast proessor and more ram.

lol wtf?

Exactly. My CPU idles at close to 0%.
DaShite, run a spyware and adware scan. Download the programs, and perform the scans when disconnected from the Internet.

Na this is not normal, the overall % usage stays around 46%, it used to stay at like 0-1%,

ill check for spyware and viruses when i get home but i don't think there are any cuz i just reformated the drive a while back, but im thinking its something in the bios thats not set correctly or somekind of setting

When you are sitting around and not running any programs besides looking at this right click on the task bar and choose the task manager to open that. Then click on the processes tab and scroll down to the system idle process. With no activity other then IE being open you should be seeing the figure going between the high 80s into the mid 90s if not idling at 99%. If you are seeing 48% type figures you may have some background app or service running.

Hes completly right. If you look at the system idle process, you will see that it ranges anywhere up to 99%, but doesn't show up as using that according to the performance tab.

im not talking about that he saiid your pc will burn out if u run linux or leave it in the bios. that is bs

No that is fact not fiction. If you simply leave any system running while in the system bios for an extended period of time the cpu has nothing to regulate it's activity leaving it to run full speed ahead and ecentually overheat.

In Linux things like the system idle process are not there to keep the cpu busy at a low speed some it won't out of control with no programs loaded. Try getting the facts first rather then sending rude private messages.
