CPU_Temp Lights puzzlement

More woes after a recent diassembly to clean out dust...

I've noticed that my rig is considerably louder than it used to be. It seems that the fans are constantly running at high rates, even when my computer isn't doing anything. I checked the motherboard and the CPU_TEMP lights were on... both of them. I'm guessing this means that my CPU is heating up and that's what's making the fans work harder. Why though?

I DID remove the CPU fan to dust it, but I made sure to re-attach it correctly and it's still functioning just fine, as far as I can tell. I didn't have this problem before-- the CPU heating up while the computer is simply browsing the internet. So I'm confused.

All I have running right now is Chrome, and only one CPU_TEmp light is on

A computer-savvy friend of mine says that because I separated the heatsink from the CPU and re-attached it without applying new thermal paste, the efficiency of the thermal paste has been greatly reduced and that's causing my CPU to heat up. thoughts?

Yeah okay, but we need to see what the temps are. What cooler are you using?

The stock one

He's right. Each time you take off the cooler you need to clean it and the CPU with isopropyl alcohol and apply new paste. If there's a nearby computer store, pick up some Arctic Silver 5 paste and Arcti Clean solution. When whiping off the old paste it says to use a lint free cloth but tissues or toilet paper have worked fine, along with paper towels. Some use coffee filters.

In short, you need to replace the paste.

Okay, in the meantime, is there any danger of causing damage to my CPU? I'd like to play some TF2 :-p

Well that depends on how hot it's getting, and what CPU you're using. So HWMonitor or CoreTemp will monitor the temperatures. What model of CPU do you have?

From Intel:

All Core i7 9xx variants:

Vcore Max 1.375v
Tcase Max (CPU temperature) 68c
Tjunction (Core temperature) 73c

So the cores in HWMonitor should not exceed 73c. Load up TF2 and play for a little while, then alt tab and check the temps. If the max recorded is anywhere near 70c I'd be worried.

To help with your idle temperatures I would recommend enabled EIST in the BIOS, but replacing that paste should be a priority.

Sorry, but are you able to see the picture I posted above? (Where I said "All I have running right now is Chrome, and only one CPU_TEmp light is on") I used imgur and I've had problems with that before. Your replies make a lot more sense if I assume you can't see that screenshot.

In any case, I'll post it again, this time using photobucket.

Seems like I should turn off my computer then until I replace the paste.

No, I can't see your pic at on the first page as I'm at TAFE with limited network access (blocked sites etc)

I can see the pic above, as photobucket is not blocked. Your core temperatures are way too high. You need to fix up that paste before the CPU becomes damaged or degrades.

Okay. Thanks linkin!

Well shit guys, I ran my system for 2 days without replacing the thermal paste. Do you think I made an expensive noob mistake and caused some permanent damage?

I also suspect that the video/audio problems I was having earlier are related to my failure to replace the paste.

In any case, I've replaced the goo and things seems to be running fine now.

Excellente yeah i doubt any damage was done most motherboards have a safety shut off switch for processors if they get over a certain *c either this or an alarm.

Also yes this was likely to cause problems you were having earlier with your video and audio problems.
