CPU's - A bit confused.

I haven't upgraded my PC in ages, so am now thinking about doing so.

My current system has a 2.4ghz Pentium 4 socket 478 (Asus P4P800 Mobo).

Just looked at new CPU prices..... now very confused.

What is the new Pentium D processor?

What is the difference between the Pentium D 500, 600, 800 and 900 series chips (apart from price)?

How is the new Pentium D better than my version of Pentium 4?

Also (I know it's in the wrong section - sorry), is the new PC2-3200 & PC2-4300 RAM the latest DDR2 version of my PC3200 RAM?

Dual core pentium 4 basicly. It only works for LGA (socket) 775, so your board doesnt support it.

500: Single core 1 Mb L2 cache
600: Single core 2 Mb L2 cache
800: Dual core 2 X 1 Mb L2 cache
900: Dual core 2 X 2Mb L2 cache

Other extensions will signify things like 64 bit, hyperthreading, production process.

All of the processors named this way are only for socket 775.

Its dual core and faster and has higher bus speeds, although the last two are for any modern P 4.

DDR2 is a completely different type of RAM taht will not work with your board.

Basicly to support all this new tech you need a socket 775 board.
 
yep, 2.4ghz P4 is definitely worth upgrading though :)
actually my chip is 2.4ghz but it obviously performs alot better...
right now im on a 2.66ghz celery at school with 256mb of ram and a 40gb hard drive...
but the new server upstairs has dual P4 EE 3.2ghz procs, it's a pretty sweet server :)..
it also has a storage space of 2TB

you might want to look at an X2 3800+ or 4200+... 4400+ if you can dish out some cache (HAHA cash)..

and if you want single core then the 3700+ would be a nice proc, or the 4000+

haha actually he's not being a fanboy, its true, AMD processors are better for some applications such as games... Pentium 4 is better for other applications.
athlon 64 X2 caught up and left Pentium D in the dust, however Intel's Conroe is going to leave the X2's in the smoke (for gaming at least :) )
basically dont spend $1000 dollars to get the best cpu because i almost guarantee that in a year it'll be outdated because that's just the way computers work, theyre bad investments normally.

what will you be doing with the comp? that makes a huge difference in buying a cpu...
