cracked laptop monitor

the other day my brother dropped a penknife (closed) on our laptop which i verry stupidly left on the floor. the screen looks as though it has cracked like glass, does anyone know if it would be better to send it to ASUS to get it repaired or buy myself a 15.4" WXGA monitor and fit it in myself. or the third option is to buy a desktop monitor and run it off that. or even to get a new desktop pc.
the laptop is a ASUS X58Lseries, if anyone wants to know.
kinda getting angry at ASUS now, i had to send this laptop away to get the screen repaired after a technical fault with it that wasnt due to me (it was free), but they also said that if i send them my laptop with the screen broke and its my fault then i will be charged £80 for a new screen.... kinda makes me wonder how much of a poor job they have done with the screen, even though the laptop has worked great.

sorry i cant take a picture of it, i lost my camera charger somewhere and have been to busy to look.

i guess it would also be best if i stopped using the laptop, my brothers on my desktop and i got to settle with half of the screen being broke and a verry small internet browser :p

depending how much knowledge you have it would be worth fitting a new screen yourself but fitting a screen on a laptop isnt really a novices job so depends if your confident you can manage it, or as you mentioned depending on the age and overall condition of your laptop plus the cost of a new screen, you might want to way up buying a new machine.

thanks, i have sent a report to ASUS to find out how much it will cost, i had a quick look on the internet for a 15.4 WXGA replacement and they are £70-80.
i may want to get a new laptop, but i think i may just build myself a desktop computer instead.

i bought a laptop with a cracked screen, bought the same screen off ebay fitted it in less than 20mins then sold it for a profit of £50...

its easy aslong as you take your time, there is only a few screws and some ribons connecting the screen to the laptop

It's not exactly easy, but if you read some guides you can do it yourself, provided you are careful.

Its only worth it if you cant find it somewhere cheap, and you have the skills to replace it.
once i dropped my ibook, it slid off my bed, it was closed and landed upside down, right on top of the power brick. when i checked it. the entire lcd panel was shattered. not usable to any extent. and the computer was out of warrunty. and i have experience opening the computer so i decided to do it myself. i found that the model lcd panel in the computer was $200-$400 new. then i found ifixit.com had used ones for $50, but i ended up getting mine for $30. it said it has some scratches and dark spots but they are barely noticable and for a 6 year old comp, i have no complaints. the best is to find a used one. i wouldnt pay full price for a new panel

If it's slower and you want a new one, sell it on mp3car.com. Those guys don't need a screen so you shouldn't have too much trouble selling it.

how easy is it to repair a screen?
i have no knowledge of replacing screens, but if its cheaper than sending it to ASUS it may be the best idea.

you shouldnt need the receipt, asus should be able to find they date of purchase or atleast the month it was manufactured by their serial numbers on the computers.
shouldnt need the receipt to find your warrunty info
