Crash Dumping Question.

My laptop just gave me a crash dump notification, and a choice to start my system normally, or select the SAFE mode method. I didn't know what all might be entailed/required by the safe mode method - so I chose the regular choice. The screen, then, went black (or very dark blue) and remained that way for quite a while. In fact, the only thing that was visible, on the screen, was the mouse pointer. I shut it down (physically) and, after a short period, pressed the power button. This time, no notice (as before) - just that dark screen.

I have some stuff to get done, so I hit the F10 button - upon next attempt at booting - to arrive at the screen for system restoration/formatting. It is going through that process right now.

But isn't there a way to recover from a crash dump without having to go through the extreme measure of formatting?

Usually when you get the black screen like that it's either errors on the hard drive, infected, or some other hardware has gone out. Hopefully you didn't have data that you needed.

No...nothing critical, at least (The biggest issue was having to reinstall all of my programs).

I do, however, have to admit that I am a fair bit worried over the possibility of this headache happening again; with my not being armed with what the actual causative factor was behind it happening in the first place. At the very least, I wish that I had some type of backup software (I did have Norton Ghost, but it wouldn't work on my Windows7 64-bit laptop). Having such a program wouldn't prevent any further computer knock downs, but it would enable me to restore my programs without having to address each one individually.

But thanks for responding.
