I was playing tf2 and then all of a sudden my computer just shut down. Now when I try to turn it on everything works but the graphics card spins a little then stops. Please help.

Does it all work ok when your 7870 is out of the system?

A CX 500 is probably a little on the tight side for a 7870 - I'd send it back (once you made sure the PSU is ok by testing it in another system) and get yourself a CX 600 so you have a bit more headroom.

Everything works fine apart from the graphics card not starting. My dad also said it might be the PSU. I don't have another system to test it on though. However it has been working all good for about 4months.

500 watt is the bare minimum for a 7870. So you are running really tight. Definately suggest getting the cx600. Your card may be fried though. Need to check that in another system.

I didn't think it was because 500w as I have been using it for about 4 months now witrh no problem. Also I don't think its fried because it starts sometimes after like 15mins. I am thinking the PSU is having issues

Regardless, 500W is a bit tight for a 7870. A CX 600 would have been a better PSU choice. There is a chance it may have worked for several months, but isn't now. Things like that happen if you push stuff to the max. In this case, you were pushing your PSU to the max with that graphics card.

I turned it on this morning and it booted normally. I am still going to the computer shop to get a 600w power supply or maybe even 750 so will be enough for future upgrades.
Unit then is it safe to still use my computer if it boots normally

No. Turn it off and leave it off. Your just risking it going pop and taking out your components. 600 is more than you'll need for most video cards any more.
