Crashed PC, No OS

I have a computer that crashed, and now has no OS. I am trying to find one to put on, but have more important things to buy at the moment. I was advised by a friend, to use a Hyunju XP Installation Disk, put in the Acer Product Key (from the sticker on the pc case), and then register, and it would register as an Acer and be legal. Any of you guys know if this is correct, and if not, where can I get a cheap OS?

well right now it sounds like you have a legal license to a copy of xp, therefor if you can come up with a cd that will work with that product key it is perfectly legal because you have license to use it even if the cd has been used to install xp on another machine. it wouldn't be legal if you were useing the same proudct key on more than one computer but from what you said it doesn't sound that way. So i'd just find someone with an xp cd (same version and release to match your product key) and install it. Also since you're talking about an acer there might be an automated recovery partition somewhere on your hard drive that would allow you to recover your operating system without the need for a cd.

I'm not sure of the legality of this but you could find a pirated copy of your lisence version (home, pro, media) and use that with your Acer product key on your computer. dont ask how to get it here, as i'm probably already in trouble for suggesting it.

Or you could go with the COMPLETELY LEGAL and FREE way and download Ubuntu Linux. :D Its easy to install, easy to set up, and easy to use. You will still have the ability to use almost all filetypes, and have a large source of free and open source software.

If all else fails and you decide you dont like Ubuntu, you can go pay $100 for another install disk. Your choice.

Thanks for the help. I'll try Ubuntu, but for now, I've got ME on it, which is crap because all of the graphics, sound, video drivers and such dont work, and 512 mb of the RAM is not recognized. Do you think it might be worth contacting Acer about this, and maybe giving them the address of this page for reference?

I have downloaded Ubuntu, the first over 100mb file on my new 64Mb broadband line, so it was pretty much instant (1 minute, for 700Mb), and I'm burning the ISO to the disk now, so I should be able to try and use the operating system soon. Does anyone have any suggestions at good ebooks to download, or good websites to visit to download or view tutorials for Ubuntu Linux? I already tried to put FreeBSD on it, but the computer wont run, so at the moment, I'm still stuck with crappy ME. The PC doesn't need to be perfect, its only a server, but I'm loosing money from hosting companies all the time the servers down. I'm using my laptop now, but I'm not too happy about having port 80 open. . . I must get the server back online ASAP!!!

I have something else to add to my earlier post, and that is;

The ISO I downloaded is for a CD, but I don't have any blanks. Is it possible to burn the ISO to a DVD so I can boot it that way. I tried to use DVD Decrypter as recommended by a friend, but I can't seem to find it as a free download source, only as shareware. I do have torrent capability, so if one of you knows a HTTP, FTP, or TORRENT link for me to download, please post it!

My PC won't boot Ubuntu anymore. I restarted it, and now it says it cannot start. Anyone have any ideas, its giving me the same problem as FreeBSD.

IS there anything else it says apart from it cannot start? Usually there'll be a reason for why it won't start.

Going off topic slightly, but WOW you hav a 64mb broadband line, i didnt even know it was possible to download that fast, 700mb in one minute :eek:

i heard comcast tested a new setup with theirs that will do a theoretical 100megabit. Also with regards to the earlier question about legality on downloading the copy of xp, it would be prefectly legal as long as you have a license that goes with that version of xp. So if you activate it with your product key its fine as long as thats the only computer you're running it on.
