Crashes, slow startups, myriad of problems

I have a feeling that microsoft messed up a registry file?

Well, here goes:

About a week ago, my pc (windows 7 pro 64bit) wouldn't boot.
It would go to the screen that gave an indication that the boot manager was missing.
I was given the usual options, (restore, repair or reinstall).

I tried restore and "surprise" .. no restore points could be found!?
I ran the repair options .. multiple times and even though the claim that everything was fixed .. it wasn't and after starting up again and again, It would go back to that same repair, restore etc. etc. screen!

I had no other option than to use the reinstall feature.
There were two of the options: Reinstall but save all files to a backup partition or Reinstall with a complete erase.

Of course, I chose the restore with file backup and guess what?

I finally got to the desktop but "Bye Bye" files!
(Nothing was saved!)

I was willing to overlook that but here is my problem(s): I can't create any restore points, I can't get updates to work, (Updates wont even do a search).

Browsers either crash or take forever to load: Opera, IE, chrome.

(Even Task Manager freezes at times)

I have tried to download various tools to check for corrupted files or disk errors but even though I can download the tools .. I hit a wall when I try to run them!

I have had popups that read:
server execution failed 0x80080005 error and

error 0x80080002 (and possibly 0x80080003).

I need a way to install all of the updates from 2009 upwards, (This is a 2009 pc).
I can't even update my microsoft security essentials!!

Any help would make me forever in your debt!

SFC/ scannow might work or a repair install.

And BTW, MS essentials won't stop any virus. It's just a baseline scaner. Try the cloud-based light weight Bitdefender Free instead. Actually wonder now if you have a virus.

Be aware that a few of those MS updates install privacy crap that is used in Win 10.

When you do a reinstall with the option to save user files, then those files will be located in a folder called windows.old What you need to do is find your files, back them up to a different drive and then do a destructive install, the other option you were given. Do not use MSE as its not considered one of the worst virus programs out there. Free Avast works really well.
