crashing and rebooting

after attempting a correct install of a new video card, my system will reboot over and over without windows vista ever completely starting. i took the card out and went back to my onboard graphics, which was working fine until the new install, but now it continues to reboot about 8 times before finally taking hold and letting me log into windows normally.

i am running windows vista home premium, without the disc.

what do you suppose happened to my system? obviously the video card was a bust, but what did it do to my pc to cause this rebooting issue?

vista tries to fix the issue when windows begins to start, but it never can. i just get lucky after multiple tries and am able to log on.
 
I have onboard graphics i am using now, since the video card failed. NVIDIA 6150 LE onboard. Windows Vista will find the onboard driver and install it when i am able to log onto windows.

When it does its rebooting phase, it will get to the point where there is a small bar at the bottom with a green color that moves thru it, just before it gets to the log on/password screen.
 
Which graphics card is that, and what PSU do you have?

Assuming you have an adequate PSU and you are confident as to which is the correct driver for your system:

  1. Remove the new graphics card from your system and load windows with your integrated graphics.
  2. Set a system restore point.
  3. Download your graphics card driver to your desktop (but do not install).
  4. Download DriverCleaner (but do not run):http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
  5. Uninstall all nVidia/ATi drivers from Add and Remove Programmes
  6. Run driver cleaner for nVidia and ATi
  7. Shutdown and install the new graphics card.
  8. Restart in SAFE MODE (tap F8 on restart)
  9. Disable antivirus software and then install the correct graphics driver that you downloaded earlier.
  10. Restart normally.
  11. Update Direct X here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en
  12. Update Windows.
  13. Restart.

my power supply is a 500 watt psu. the graphics card is an ATI Sapphire X1650 512MB DDR2 PCI Express x16 card.

is this a known bad card or manufactuer? Should i keep my onboard NVIDIA 6150 LE graphics and send the card back?

Are you sure that your card is compatible with the motherboard?
Please tell us your motherboard's model.
 
i figured out the problem....i had installed RAM just before installing the video card. i started the pc after installing the RAM and before installing the video card and it started right up and ran fine, but after installing the video card, my pc started crashing. so therefore, i immediately pointed to the video card as the problem.....WRONG....

i took the RAM out that i had installed, after trying "bigfella's" fix that didnt work (thanx for trying tho). after taking the new RAM out, it would start normally every time. i then unistalled my onboard video graphics and reinstalled the video card....started right up with no problems. downloaded the driver for the new video card and everything is good.

how and why the new RAM worked fine without the video card, i dont know....but i now know the new RAM was defective.
