Crashing usually with IE running but not always

Hi all,

I've reformatted my drive and reinstalled XP Pro. Since then it seems to crash, by which I mean it freezes and I cannot even do a Cntrl, Alt, Delete or switch it off I have to restart it. When I was on 2000 for years it was rock-solid and never failed on me - do I need to do something with the BIOS maybe? I've uninstalled IE7 in the hope of stopping it, it hasn't worked. It seems to freeze under times of high usage.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

Thanks

Difficult to hazard a guess even. Could be a corrupted sound file, drivers or overheating.

Have a look in the event viewer under Admin Services for an indication of what caused it.

When IE acts up, could it be plugin related? I've seen computes act similarly when say Java was messed up. Each time it'd try and load java on a page, IE would crash.

Such crashes are usually caused by hardware relating problems, such as broken RAM. This is because NT-based operating systems (suchs as XP and Win2000) have quite good memory protection and normal applications can't usually crash them.

But if Windows 2000 worked perfectly it most likely isn't a hardware based problem. Instead, I would guess the problem is in the interface of hardware and software: drivers. Some piece of hardware doesn't have XP-compatible set of drivers, or the drivers have bugs which cause the problems.

I would suggest you to try to update all of your drivers, especially video card drivers. If you are running the most up-to-date drivers you can try to downgrade to the previous version.

Thanks for your advice - I'll take a look at the options.

I've uninstalled IE7 with Add/Remove Programmes, it's running on version 6 at the moment.

Hello again,

The PC is still playing up and I'm really not sure where to start with the drivers. Also when I go into device manager I see under System Devices everything is called something like Motherboard resources. Should it not stipulate the name of the motherboard??

Might be related not sure - basically when I login on Google Analytics I cannot click to continue. Instead I have to hold down shift and open in a new window. The crashing usually occurs when loading thumbnails from sites such as imageshack.us.

Please any help would be most appreciated.
